No. 13 Colby Defeats Bates 17-10 in NESCAC Play
LEWISTON, Maine -- The Colby College women's lacrosse team outscored Bates College by a 7-1 margin over a stretch of 12 minutes and 33 seconds in the first half to pull away to a 17-10 non-league victory Tuesday at Campus Avenue Field.
The Mules (1-1) received four goals from sophomore Kate Sheridan, three goals and two assists from senior Allie Libby and three more goals from junior Lauren Barrett.
Bates (3-1) led 2-1 in the early going after Molly Wagner scored her 12th goal of the season on the first of two assists from sophomore Rachel Greenwood. But Colby sophomore Lauren Strazzula connected on an assist from senior Courtney Drake less than a minute later at the 21:22 mark, and the Mules proceeded to take a 9-4 lead before entering halftime with a 10-5 advantage. Sheridan had three of her four goals in the first half, while Libby recorded all three of hers in the opening period.
Becky Julian, Carrie Lovejoy, Megan Towe, Amy Campbell and Libba Cox also tallied for the Mules. Colby senior goalie Catharine O'Brien (Reading, Vt.) recorded 13 saves.
The Mules added the non-league game with Bates after Sunday's game with Washington & Lee was canceled because of poor weather. Colby will head to Florida for three games, starting with Saturday's 6 p.m. contest with Eastern Connecticut State at the Disney Wide World of Sports.
