Raiders Use Home Cookin' to Beat Marist, 11-8

HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/20/07) – After playing on the road for seven straight games, the Colgate women's lacrosse team enjoyed some home cookin' in the form of an 11-8 win against Marist on Tuesday, Mar. 20, at Tyler's Field. The win was the second for the Raiders this season, giving them a 2-7 overall record heading into their first Patriot League contest of the season on Saturday. The Red Foxes even their record at 2-2 with the loss.

Colgate was paced by junior Jessica Van der Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.), who had three goals, sophomore Molly Carroll (Swarthmore, Pa.), who posted two goals and an assist, and junior Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y.), who netted a goal and added two helpers. Eight different Raiders found the back of the net in the victory, and nine posted at least one point, including sophomore Maddie Kearns (Chevy Chase, Md.), who came off the bench to contribute two assists. Marist freshmen Liz Falco and Lindsay Rinefierd paced their team with three goals each.

Colgate jumped out to a 6-1 lead 25 minutes into the game. However, Marist scored with 8.3 seconds on the clock to cut the Raiders' lead to four heading into halftime. Colgate continued its offensive onslaught in the second half, netting four out of the five goals scored in the first 6:09 to go up 10-3. But the Raiders managed just one goal the rest of the way as Marist rattled off three straight to cut Colgate's lead in half, 10-6. Carroll snapped the Red Foxes' scoring streak with a goal from Pittard, but Marist scored two more times in the final nine minutes to make it a nail-biter until Colgate ultimately prevailed.

Colgate sophomore goalkeeper Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) earned the victory after making six saves, including five in the first half. Marist junior keeper Liz Burkhard took the loss after stopping eight shots. The Raiders earned an edge in shots, 28-23, but the Red Foxes had the edge in groundballs, 9-4. Each team won 10 of the 20 draws attempted.

Colgate begins Patriot League play on Saturday, Mar. 24, at American, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Raiders are looking for their third league championship in the last four years.
