No. 3 Wesleyan Holds Off Merchant Marine, 11-8
KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Dominating the opening 30 minutes to grab a 6-1 lead at intermission, the Wesleyan University Cardinals looked in control for a comfortable fifth consecutive victory on the road at the Merchant Marine Academy Wed., March 21.
The Mariners scored five times in the third stanza and drew even, 7-7, early in the fourth period, with sophomore Brennan Dougherty coming up big, scoring the sixth goal and assisting on goals four and five. Sophomore Jason Ben-Eliyahu's fast-break goal off a feed from sophomore Spike Malangone spotted the Cards an 8-7 lead with 11:25 to go.
USMMA tied it again at the 9:54 mark courtesy of freshman Brian Flannery. Wesleyan senior Mike Hines then completed his hat trick with a long bouncer at 3:57, spotted Ben-Eliyahu with a pinpoint pass at 2:43 as he, too, completed his hat trick, and Ben-Eliyahu tacked on a fourth marker just 39 seconds later to pad the margin as Wesleyan, ranked third in the country, improved to 5-0 with the 11-8 victory.
Wesleyan opens NESCAC play Saturday, March 24, hosting #15 Tufts.
