Amherst Falls to 1-2 with 16-9 Loss to #10 St. Lawrence

CLAREMONT, FL – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team fell to 1-2 on the season with a tough 16-9 loss at the hands of St. Lawrence University this afternoon in Claremont, FL. Despite trailing 9-2 at halftime, Amherst refused to quit, and stayed neck-and-neck with the Saints in the second half to keep the deficit at 7.

Amherst will return home tomorrow after a going .500 in their spring training swing of Florida. Senior Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) led the Lord Jeff offense again this afternoon, tallying 2 goals and 2 assists to bring his point total to 13 in just three games.

Helping carry to load with Cherney was first-year attacker Tom McDonald (Manhasset, NY) who scored two goals on the day. Amherst also saw nice production from a number of other offensive minded players, as Matt Himler (Manhasset, NY), Will Ferrer (Greenwich, CT), John Milone (Manhasset, NY), Rob Madden (Woodbridge, CT) and Tom Foote (Newton, MA) each chipped in a goal of their own.

Amherst sophomore Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) and first-year Andrew Harrison (Hanover, MA) split time in goal for the Jeffs, with Pietroforte making 11 saves in the first half, while Harrison turned away 9 saint attempts in the second frame.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, when they will take on NESCAC rival Bates College in their first conference game of the season. Game time is set for noon at Garber Field on the campus of UMASS-Amherst.
