Elizabethtown Wins MAC Opener over King's, 18-4

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown won its Middle Atlantic Conference opener with an 18-4 home blowout of King's College (Pa.) Thursday to improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. King's dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the MAC with the loss. It was the first time the Blue Jays defeated King's since the 2004 season, and Elizabethtown is now off to its best start through four games since 2003.

The Blue Jays leapt out to a 4-0 lead in the opening seven minutes. King's responded with a pair of goals, but Elizabethtown followed with eight unanswered goals over the final 17:15 of the first half, including three goals in the opening half's final minute, to storm out to a 12-2 lead by halftime. The Blue Jays continued their barrage with five more unanswered goals in the first 12 minutes of the second half to go up 17-2 before King's scored its final two goals. Elizabethtown scored the game's final goal with 13:07 left on the clock.

Despite the score, Elizabethtown's advantage in shots over King's was just 32-28, and Elizabethtown led 27-20 in shots on goal. Etown goaltender Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) made 16 saves and had two ground balls in the Blue Jay net, while King's goaltenders made just nine saves. Elizabethtown also held an 18-14 advantage in ground balls and a 10-5 edge in caused turnovers. King's had a 14-10 advantage in draw controls for the game.

Kelsea Kozak (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) led Elizabethtown in points with seven and in assists with five, and she scored two goals. Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) led Elizabethtown in goals scored with four and in ground balls with three, and she had two assists for six points. Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) scored three times and had two assists for five points. Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/homeschooled) led Etown in draw controls with four and scored three goals. Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) and Sarah Gilson (Ocean View, NJ/Ocean City) each scored a pair of goals for Etown. Carly Goetting (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Borough) scored her first collegiate goal on an eight meter shot 6:16 into the game, and she led Etown in caused turnovers with two. Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) added a goal as well for the Blue Jays.

Lindsay Sabo (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) led King's in scoring with two goals and in draw controls with four. Erica Kovats (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and Sara Alesso (Burlington, NJ/Holy Cross) each scored a single goal for King's. King's backup goaltender Chrissy Keenan (North Sutton, NH/Kearsarge) played over 22 minutes, allowed just four goals, made one save, tied for the team lead in ground balls with three and led the team in caused turnovers with two.

Elizabethtown will return to action on the road Saturday, March 24 against MAC rival Moravian College in a 1:00 p.m. game.
