No. 8 Salisbury Rallies to Defeat Colorado College, 8-5
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Eighth-ranked Salisbury University scored six consecutive goals to wipe out an early 3-0 deficit and then held on to defeat Colorado College in a Division III women's lacrosse game on Friday afternoon at CC's Washburn Field.
The Tigers took advantage of an own goal and tallies from senior attacker Kate Fitzgerald and senior midfielder Robin Harvey to build a 3-0 lead 12:48 into the first half.
Thanks primarily to sophomore goaltender Jess Van Doren, who had eight of her 13 saves in the first half, CC kept the Sea Gulls scoreless until junior attacker Sue Ackerman scored with 9:09 remaining.
Salisbury capitalized on 13 Tiger turnovers, only five of which were forced, to cut into CC's lead. Sophomore midfielder Robin Bishop tied the game with a free-position goal with 1:34 left in the first half, and senior attacker Stephanie Shores put Salisbury in front with 34 seconds to go off a feed from Ackerman.
The defenses continued to dominate during the first 14 minutes of the second half, but senior midfielder Katie Simmons and junior midfielder Jessica Liston struck 1:50 apart to give the Sea Gulls a 6-3 lead with 14:26 to play.
Fitzgerald and sophomore attacker Mallory Newton cut the Tigers' deficit to one with 9:43 remaining, but after winning the draw control, CC lost an opportunity to tie the game with an unforced error on an errant pass.
Sophomore midfielder Jessica Chmielewski and Shores closed out the scoring for SU and the Sea Gulls were able to run the remaining 4:19 off the clock.
Freshman Natalie Pappas stopped eight shots to earn the victory in goal. Van Doren stopped four of five free-position attempts.
The Tigers will be idle until March 31 when they travel to Geneva, NY, for the William Smith College Heron Draw. CC will face Denison University and SUNY-Cortland.
