No. 18 Scarlet Knights Suffer Loss to No. 9 Georgetown
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 24, 2007) – The No. 18/19 Rutgers women's lacrosse team (6-2, 1-1) dropped a 9-3 decision to ninth-ranked Georgetown (5-2, 2-0) on Saturday, March 24. The loss was just the second of the season for the Scarlet Knights and their first conference loss of the season. With the win, Georgetown remains undefeated in conference play and extends its winning streak against Rutgers to eight games.
The Scarlet Knights managed just three goals against the Hoyas, marking RU's lowest single-game goal total of the season. Michelle Poole (Hackettstown, N.J.), Katie Batiuk (Jackson, N.J.) and Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) provided the offense for Rutgers. RU's defense did hold the Hoyas to nine goals, well below Georgetown's average of 11.28 scores per game. It marked just the second time this season the Hoyas failed to reach double-digits in scoring.
The Hoyas got on the board first and never trailed in the game. The Scarlet Knights did not get their first goal of the game until one second remained in the first half when Poole scored on a free position goal to make the score 6-1 at the half.
Rutgers came out strong in the second half, recording 13 of their 23 total shots. Batiuk scored the second half's first goal to cut Georgetown's lead to 6-2. The Hoyas then scored three unanswered goals before Cantwell scored RU's third goal and final goal of the game. With her goal early in the second half, Batiuk now has a team-leading 16 scores on the season.
Erika Page (Moorestown, N.J.) started the game in goal for Rutgers before Sandra Abel (Monrovia, Md.) entered the game in the second half. Abel finished with six saves to help hold Georgetown to just three goals in the second period of play.
Coco Stanwick led the Hoyas with four goals and also added one assist. Zan Morley finished with two goals and teammate Bunny O'Reilly had one goal and one assist. Georgetown goalie Maggie Koch made 14 saves in the game.
The Scarlet Knights will be back in action when they host Old Dominion on Monday, March 26, at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played on the RU Turf Field.

Washington, D.C. – The No. 9 Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team raced out to a 6-1 halftime lead and cruised to a 9-3 win at No. 18 Rutgers on Saturday afternoon at the RU Turf Field. The Hoyas extended their BIG EAST regular-season winning streak to 36 games. GU improves to 5-2, 2-0 in league action.
Senior attacker Coco Stanwick (Baltimore. Md./Notre Dame Prep) posted four goals to go along with an assist while junior Zan Morley (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) scored a season-high two goals. Sophomore Bunny O’Reilly (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside) went for a goal and an assist. Hoya senior goalkeeper Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) matched a career-high with 14 saves.
“Maggie played very well in goal today, making some big saves for us,” said Hoya head coach Ricky Fried. “It was a good team effort and we gave up only shots we wanted to give up.”
Stanwick and Brittany Baschuk (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) both netted unassisted goals in the first seven minutes. O’Reilly scored after an assist from Stanwick at 19:34 and less than three minutes later senior Schuyler Sutton (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) got in the scoring column with an unassisted tally for a 4-0 GU advantage.
Morley scored off a free position shot at 8:42 before Stanwick scored after making a strong offensive move to increase the Hoya lead to 6-0. Michelle Poole scored RU’s first goal with just one second left in the first half. Rutgers (6-2, 1-1 BE) cut the Hoya lead to 6-2 five minutes into the second half but the Hoyas then tallied the game’s next three goals for a 9-2 edge.
