No. 8 Washington College Downs McDaniel, 14-9
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Chris Read was involved in half of the scoring, tallying a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists to key a 14-9 victory for eighth-ranked Washington (Md.) at McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday. Jared Nutter (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Gibbs Preston (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) each tallied a hat trick to pace the Green Terror (4-2, 0-1 CC), who outshot the Shoremen (7-1, 3-0 CC) 40-37 on the day. Kolyn Kirby scored four goals for Washington while Jimmy Kielek added three goals and two assists.
After missing on their first five attempts, the Shoremen finally opened scoring when Reed found Kirby at the 9:44 mark. Mike Hughes won the ensuing faceoff and went straight to the cage, tallying unassisted 11 seconds later. Bill Warner (Yardley, PA/LaSalle) sliced the deficit in half, finishing a solo run at the 8:24 mark before Kirby finished a Kielek feed nearly a minute and a half later to re-establish the two-goal advantage for the Shoremen. Chris Edmonds (Laurel, MD/Pallotti) found Matt Buschman (Towson, MD/Calvert Hall) with 4:23 showing in the first quarter to trim the deficit to 3-2.
Kirby and Kielek added man-up markers on either side of the first-quarter break – the first two of four extra-man goals converted by Washington in the game – to stretch the lead to 5-2. Andrew Ostrusky made it a 6-2 game with an unassisted tally at the 12:12 mark of the second. Nutter and Preston went back-to-back to once again trim the deficit to two with 8:40 showing before Read found the back of the net 36 seconds later. Preston made it a 7-5 game at the break, tallying assisted in the final 47 seconds of the period.
Read and Nutter traded goals in the first 1:11 of the second half before Kielek scored back-to-back man-up goals. Read added his third of the game with 5:36 to play in the third period, extending the advantage to 11-6. Nutter snapped the flurry with a solo run of his own at the 3:26 mark. Kirby and Anthony Hidell tallied 32 seconds apart to make it a 13-7 game with 13:19 to play. Edmonds capped his one-goal, one-assist day with an unassisted marked with 11 minutes on the clock before Read and Preston traded goals 3 minutes, 2 seconds apart, setting the final margin with 4:48 remaining.
Brad Baer (Westminster, MD/Westminster) won 10 of 23 face-offs while Hughes went 12-for-23. The Green Terror was whistled for 11 penalties, leading to 10 extra-man opportunities for the Shoremen. Washington was flagged six times. Benjamin Yingling (Westminster, MD/Loyola Blakefield) made 12 saves in goal for McDaniel while Gordon Gohen stopped 11 shots at the other end. The Green Terror returns to action at home against Ursinus on Saturday. Game time is 3:00 p.m.

WESTMINSTER, MD -- Junior attack Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored four goals and dished out three assists for a game-best seven points as eighth-ranked Washington College downed host McDaniel College, 14-9, in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Bair Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win, while the Green Terror fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial with the loss.
Washington College jumped out to a 4-2 lead first quarter lead with the help of three junior midfielder Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) goals. Sophomore attack Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) fed Kirby two of his three goals.
The Shoremen made it 6-2 on a unassisted tally by senior midfielder Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) with 12:12 remaining in the second quarter. The Green Terror however scored three of the final four goals in the opening half to trim the margin to 7-5 at intermission. The run was capped by a Gibbs Preston goal with 47 seconds left in the second quarter.
