No. 11 Syracuse Slips Past No. 20 UConn in Overtime
STORRS, Conn. (March 24, 2007) - Kristin Brady tallied the game-tying goal and two points in the first overtime period to propel the 11th-ranked Syracuse University women's lacrosse team over No. 20 University of Connecticut, 18-16, Saturday afternoon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex in front of a record crowd of 1,087. The Huskies led by as many as four goals in the second period after taking the lead for the first time midway through the first half.
The loss, which is the first for the Huskies since Feb. 28, drops their record to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST. With the win, the Orange improve to 5-3 on the year and 2-1 in the conference.
Janet Williams (Reisterstown, Md.), Whitney Michele (East Rochester, N.Y.) and Katy Ryan (Hamburg, N.Y.) each tallied three goals on the day, with Williams scoring UConn's first two of the game to tie the contest at two-all after falling behind early. Back-and-forth play ensued until Kristin Link (Slingerlands, N.Y.) scored on an assist from Shannon Burke (Camillus, N.Y.) at the 1:23 mark to give the Huskies a 6-5 lead. Two more quick tallies would send the two teams into halftime with a 8-5 score.
From that point, UConn maintained the advantage until Brady scored the game-tying tally with :27 to go in regulation. During this stretch, Burke and Ryan each had two goals in the second period to keep UConn in the lead.
The Huskies dominated play through the first half, controlling 10-of-14 draw controls in the period and tallying a 23-20 shot advantage. Syracuse counterattacked in the second period, coming out on top in both categories as the Orange slowly chipped away at the Husky lead. Their momentum continued into the extra periods, as they grabbed 5-of-6 draws and scored three quick goals in bonus time.
UConn begins a three-game road swing, starting Friday evening in South Bend, Ind., as the Huskies take on Notre Dame at 7:00 p.m. This will be followed by a Sunday contest against two-time defending national champion Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. at noon (CT).

Storrs, Conn. – Junior Kristin Brady (Binghamton, N.Y.) scored three key goals to help lead the 11th-ranked Orange to victory against No. 20 Connecticut, 18-16, in overtime. Brady scored a goal late in regulation to send to the game into overtime and then added two goals during the first overtime session to help Syracuse to its third-consecutive victory and its second straight against a ranked opponent.
Freshman Halley Quillinan (Glenmont, N.Y.) led the Orange with four goals. Brady, sophomore Katie Rowan (Delmar, N.Y.) and freshman Christina Dove (Bel Air, Md.) each tallied a hat trick and seniors Ashley Pike (Watertown, N.Y.) and Gaddy Fortune (Long Branch, N.J.) added two goals. Senior Jill DePetris (Radnor, Pa.) scored one goal and added two assists, while classmate Melissa Pearsall (Cortland, N.Y.) recorded one assist.
Syracuse (5-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) scored the first two goals of the game to grab the early advantage only to see the Huskies (5-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) use a 5-1 run to take a two-goal lead, 5-3. Rowan and DePetris both scored a goal to knot the game at five but Connecticut netted three goals in the final 1:23 of the first half to head into intermission with an 8-5 advantage.
Rowan and Quillinan scored the first two goals of the second half but the Huskies tallied the next three goals to take its largest lead of the afternoon, 11-7. Connecticut continued to lead throughout the second half and led by as many as three goals late in the game. The Huskies' Laura Trzasko netted her first goal of the afternoon to give Connecticut a 15-12 advantage with 5:01 remaining in the game. Pike scored her second goal of the day with 4:34 left and Dove pulled the Orange within one with 2:32 remaining.
