No. 17 Yale Upends No. 8 Dartmouth, 10-8

Lauren Taylor scored three goals, including the game-tying goal with 8:15 to play and the game-winning goal with 6:24 to play, as No. 17 Yale upset No. 8 Dartmouth 10-8 Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field. The Bulldogs also got three goals from Marya Myers and two each from Lara Melniker and Jenn Warden as they defeated the Big Green for just the fourth time in the last 16 years.

Kristen Barry paced Dartmouth with four goals. Yale captain Lindsay Levin led the Bulldog defense with four caused turnovers while Jess Champion held Dartmouth's leading scorer, preseason All-American Whitney Douthett, without a goal. Yale goalkeeper Ellen Cameron made four saves while Julie Wadland made eight for the Big Green.

Yale (6-3, 1-1 Ivy) took an early 2-0 lead on goals by Taylor and Myers, but the Big Green battled back with the next four goals. Goals by Warden and Melniker tied the game at halftime, but Dartmouth (3-3, 0-1 Ivy) scored the first three goals of the second half to take its biggest lead of the day.

After the Bulldogs tied the game at seven, Sarah Szefi put Dartmouth up with 9:06 remaining. That lead lasted less than a minute before Taylor made it 8-8, and her next goal -- her 34th goal of the year -- gave Yale the lead for good.

Myers scored an insurance goal with 5:01 to play, and Warden's draw control after that enabled the Bulldogs to maintain possession and run off most of the final minutes of the game on offense.

Yale returns to action on Wednesday, hosting UMass at 3:00 p.m.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Kristen Barry (Duxbury, Mass.) scored four goals for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse team, but the No. 8 Big Green fell to No. 17 Yale, 10-8, Saturday afternoon.

Senior Sarah Szefi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) gave Dartmouth (3-3 overall, 0-1 Ivy) an 8-7 lead with 9:06 left in the second half.

But Yale's Lauren Taylor tied the game less than a minute later and then scored what proved to be the gamewinner for a 9-8 Bulldog lead with 6:24 remaining. Marya Myers gave Yale an insurance marker at 5:01.

Barry scored three of her goals in the opening half as the game was tied 4-4 at the break. After Yale opened the game with a 2-0 lead, Barry and senior Margo Duke (Englewood, Colo.) gave Dartmouth a 4-2 lead at 9:06 before the Bulldogs answered.

Szefi, senior Jen Pittman (New Canaan, Conn.) and Barry scored three straight the first 10 minutes of the second half for a 7-4 Big Green lead. But Yale scored a trio of its own to make it 7-7 at 11:18.

Although Dartmouth has a 12-4 record against Yale since 1992, the Bulldogs have been a thorn in the Big Green's side the last two games, winning 6-5 last year in Hanover before today's victory at New Haven.

For Dartmouth, senior Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) was held scoreless for the first time this season, but still contributed two assists. Freshman goaltender Julie Wadland (Andover, Mass.) made eight saves.

The Big Green is back in action on Sunday, March 25, traveling to Columbia for a 2:00 p.m. Ivy League matchup.
