No. 3 Amherst Gets Past Bates in NESCAC Play, 10-7
LEWISTON, Maine -- In a well-played and close NESCAC women's lacrosse game Saturday at Campus Avenue Field, the Amherst College Lord Jeffs came away with a 10-7 victory over the host Bates College Bobcats.
Sophomore Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, Mass.) scored four goals and added an assist for Amherst (3-1, 2-0 NESCAC), which is ranked No. 3 in the latest IWLCA Division III poll. Senior Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, N.J.) scored once and notched four assists. Sophomore Amy Craig (Denver, Colo.) added a pair of goals.
Bates first-year Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) each scored twice for the Bobcats (4-2, 0-1 NESCAC), while first-year Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) had two assists to go with one goal. Bates junior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored her 100th career goal in the game. Both goalies played stellar games as Bates outshot Amherst 29-28. Amherst junior Linda McEvoy (Rochester, N.Y.) made 14 saves while Bates junior Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) made 11 stops.
Amherst jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of Noonan goals, but Bates had the game tied at 2 by the 18:42 mark of the half, as first-year Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine) deftly converted a Masters pass from behind the extended goal line, and Wagner scored her 100th career goal two minutes later by sneaking a shot into the near lower corner of the goal while stumbling away from the goal.
Bates took the lead at 3-2 with 10:51 to play in the half as Masters fed Maciewicz. Briody and Amherst senior Lauren Dudley (Baltimore, Md.) scored back-to-back goals to put the Jeffs back on top, but Maciewicz tied the game at 4 with a brilliant finish of an entry pass by sophomore Rachel Greenwood (Williamstown, Mass.).
Amherst senior Dana Kuper (Denver, Colo.) tallied a goal with only 13 seconds left in the half, giving the Jeffs a 5-4 halftime advantage and beginning a four-goal Amherst run that put the Jeffs in the lead for good.
