Catanese Powers MSM in 24-1 Win over Saint Francis
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored three of the first five goals of the game to power Mount St. Mary's past Saint Francis (Pa.) 24-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Catanese notched a career-high five marker, including the first two goals of the game at 1:43 and 1:59 off Candice Welkie (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) helpers. The sophomore then scored at 9:31 and 18:02 in the first half before capping off her career day with the first score in the second half at 33:15. Catanese added four ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover.
Casey Paris (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) tallied three goals and three assists for the Mount (1-6, 1-0 NEC) while Rebecca Douglass (Towson, Md./Towson Catholic) had three markers and an assist, and Jenna Duffy (Bel Air, Md./Catholic) chipped in two markers and two assists in the winning effort.
Liz McCague scored off a Meghan Crosby assist late in the second half for the Red Flash's (0-3, 0-2 NEC) only score on the day.
Mount St. Mary's stormed out of the opening draw control with 11 goals before the midway point in the first half and never looked back en route to its first win of the year.
Welkie, who had a goal and three assists in her first career start, set up Catanese on nearly identical plays at 1:43 and 16 seconds later to get the scoring started. Kathleen Rossetti (Havre de Grace, Md./Perry Hall) then connected with Welkie at 2:46 before sophomore Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) dished out three consecutive assists. Waraksa hooked up with Duffy, Catanese and Paris in a span of six minutes and two seconds to hand the Mountaineers a 6-0 margin.
After Douglass hooked up with Duffy at 10:58, Duffy connected with Paris at 22:17 and Paris found the back of the net on her own 25 seconds later. Rossetti handed out her second assist on the day with Douglass the recipient this time at 13:21 before A.J. Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) converted a free-position attempt at 14:36.
Katie Falatach (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) scored twice sandwiched in between Catanese's fourth goal of the match to give Mount St. Mary's a 14-0 advantage with 10:41 left in the first half.
Douglass found the twine at 20:54 before Colleen O'Neil (Bethesda, Md./St. Johns College) notched her first collegiate goal at 23:03 and then O'Neill's high school teammate Jacqui Ricca (Poolesville, Md./St. Johns College) scored her first marker of the year with nine seconds remaining until the break.
Catanese posted her fifth goal at 33:45 before Duffy set up freshman Emily Kirby's (Towson, Md./Franklin) first career score at 35:48. Kirby then found the twine unassisted three minutes and 10 seconds later to increase the margin to 20-0.
After Douglass found the back of the net off a Paris helper at 41:18, Johnson notched her second score of the day with 17:15 on the clock. Welkie then set up Melanie Schwer's (Riva, Md./South River) first collegiate marker at 48:14 before Paris helped cap off the offensive barrage when she feed Rossetti at 51:18.
McCague ended the Mountaineers' hopes for a shutout when she found the twine off a Crosby assist with 5:37 left in the match.
Jane Karger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) made five saves in 41:18 minutes of action while freshman Melanie Showers (Poolesville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) made her collegiate debut in between the pipes with four saves in 18:42 minutes of work. Samantha Morgan turned away six shots while Katie Godshall made three stops for Saint Francis (Pa.).
