Key Breaks Three Records as #13 JHU Tops Oregon, 20-4
BALTIMORE, MD - The #13 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team dominated the #20 Oregon Ducks 20-4 on Saturday ending a two-game losing skid. In the win, senior attacker Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) broke three school records with a 13-point effort. The Blue Jays improve to 5-3 on the season while the Ducks fall to 7-4.
Hopkins came out firing, scoring just 13 seconds in when Key found freshman Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's) for her 14th of the season. Hopkins made it 2-0 at 5:33 when Key scored her first of the afternoon. Theresa Waldron answered for Oregon just over a minute later when Brooke Dieringer found Waldron open on the far post, making it 2-1.
The Blue Jays responded with a 13-0 run that stretched into the start of the second half. The run started when senior Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) drove down the middle to the goal and scored on a low shot at 7:19. Hopkins won the ensuing draw and Key scored her second of the afternoon just 12 seconds later. Junior Kirby Houck (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) completed the Jays three-goal spurt with her seventh of the season 25 seconds later, after a failed Oregon clear. In all, seven different Blue Jays scored during the 15-goal run.
Leading 14-1 entering the second half, fifth-year senior Sarah Walsh (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber) scored just 18 seconds in when senior Alex Nolan (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park) found her wide-open on the far post. Oregon finally got on the board again, ending the Blue Jays run, when Waldron found the back of the net at 2:54. The teams went on to trade goals as Hopkins pushed out to a 17-4 lead. The Blue Jays ended the game with a 3-0 run, with freshman Danielle Ensley (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) and sophomore Jess Buicko (Altamont, NY/Hotchkiss) scoring their first career goals.
Key finished with six goals and seven assists in the game. She broke the Hopkins Division I single-game record for points, the Hopkins D-I career goals record and the Hopkins all-time career assists record. Key ended the game with 200 career goals and 125 career assists for 325 career points. She now ranks tied for seventh in NCAA D-I history in points and sixth in assists. Also moving up in the Hopkins record book is junior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) who now ranks tied for seventh in school D-I history with 28 career assists.
Walsh finished with four goals, while Schrum (three) and Houck (two) also had multi-goal games. Nolan had a three-point day for the Jays with a goal and two assists. Freshman Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales) made her first collegiate start in goal and made three saves for the win. Oregon was led by Waldron with two goals. Sam Debow made five saves in goal for the Ducks.
The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, March 28 when the #16 Penn Quakers visit Homewood Field. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
