Miller Paces `Wick to Victory Over Alfred
ONEONTA, N.Y. – Brian Miller (Acton, Mass.) pumped in three goals and seven players netted one score each as Hartwick erased a three-goal deficit in the third quarter en route to posting a 10-6 victory over Alfred, Saturday afternoon in men's lacrosse action at Wright Stadium.
Hartwick, now 3-2 on the year (1-0 in the Empire 8), trailed 5-2 at the 10:03 mark of the third quarter. The Hawks posted three consecutive goals by Jason Boltus (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Ben Schluter (Kennett Square, Pa.) and Miller to knot the score at 5-5.
After the Saxons recaptured the lead on a man-up marker by Andy Haynes, his third of the contest, at 14:46 of the fourth, Hartwick rallied with five unanswered goals on way to claiming the victory. Alex Giovinazzo (Waltham, Mass.) chipped in his fourth goals of the year at 12:56 to tie the game at 6-6. Miller gave the Hakws the lead for good at 7-6 less than a minute later at 11:48. Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) and Ryan Welch (Greenwich, Conn.) added tallies at 4:38 and 3:58 respectively to give Hartwick some extra breathing room.
In didn't take the Saxons long to open the game's scoring as Jarrett Moffitt got them on the board at 14:19 of the first. After Miller tied the game at 10:41, Alfred grabbed back the advantage as Andy Aylward took a feed from Moffit at 5:38 of the first.
Hartwick once again tied the tilt at 2-2 as Dan Hushion (Farmingdale, N.Y.) registered his second score of the year. Haynes got his first of three goals at 5:42 of the season as Alfred took a slim 3-2 advantage into intermission.
The Saxons, who fell to 3-2 (0-1 in E8) upped their lead by two more goals within a 54-second timeframe. Liam Glover scored at 10:57 and Haynes followed at 10:03 to give Alfred a 5-2 advantage.
John Meade (Ocean Beach, N.Y.), who entered in the third quarter, made four saves en route to getting his first victory of the year. Alfred goalie Erick Goins made 13 saves for the Saxons in the defeat. Hartwick out shot Alfred 56-20.
The Hawks will return to action, Monday, as they travel to face Saint Vincent College in a rescheduled tilt in Williamsport, Pa. The contest will take place on the campus of Lycoming College.
