Scranton Drops MAC Match to Drew, 12-10
MADSION, N.J.—Drew University scored four goals in the final 11 minutes of play to pull out a 12-10 victory over The University of Scranton in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Senior midfielder Jackie Messantonio (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) scored four goals and sophomores Diana Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and Erin Quinn (Baltimore, Md./The Institute of Notre Dame) added a pair for Scranton, which scored the first four goals of the second-half to wipe away a 6-3 halftime deficit. Junior attacker Kaitlyn Mimnaugh (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) contributed a goal and two assists, freshman midfielder Heather Melone (Wall, N.J./Wall Township) added a goal, and freshman attacker Kristen Marquino (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had three assists for the Royals, now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
Senior attacker Alexandra Bailly (Albany, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) scored a game-high seven goals, including four in the first-half, and senior midfielder Courtney Cunningham (Garden City, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) had two goals and five assists for Drew, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
After Bailly scored back-to-back goals within a two-minute span midway through the second-half to regain the lead for the Rangers, 8-7, Messantonio answered with a pair to give Scranton its last lead of the game, 9-8, with 12:50 remaining. Down the stretch, Cunningham scored two goals, including one off of a free position with 2:59 left after Scranton cut the gap to 11-10 on a free position goal by Minmaugh, and had two assists during the game-clinching rally.
Sophomore goalie Kristina Goetz (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) made a game and season-high 18 saves for Scranton while Drew's Staf Rutkowski (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) had five.
The Royals will host Lycoming College in Middle Atlantic Conference this Thursday, March 29, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
