No. 11 Syracuse Cruises Past Harvard, 23-12
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—No. 11 Syracuse reeled off five straight goals to close the first half to pull away en route to a 23-12 win against the Harvard women’s lacrosse team Sunday afternoon at Jordan Field.
The Orange (6-3) held an 8-6 lead before Katie Rowan scored to ignite the decisive run. Halley Quillinan paced Syracuse with five goals and two assists, while Kristin Brady notched four goals and a pair of helpers. Rowan added three goals and an assist.
Sophomore Kaitlin Martin led Harvard (2-4) in scoring with four points on three goals and an assist. Natalie Curtis also notched a hat trick for the Crimson. She and fellow junior Caroline Simmons (two goals) each registered six draw controls, as Harvard held a 22-15 edge in that category. Junior Ali Hines also scored twice for the Crimson.
Senior co-captain Perry Barlow put the Crimson up barely two minutes into the game when she converted a free-position shot. The Orange answered with four straight goals, but Harvard would continue to bounce back for most of the half. The Crimson held Syracuse without a goal for more than seven minutes while Martin and Curtis scored to get the margin down to 4-3. Martin’s goal came off a steal and feed by Barlow.
Syracuse, however, built the lead back up with three goals in 39 seconds. Curtis then scored twice for Harvard before Rowan tallied for the Orange and Crimson junior Tara Schoen’s free-position goal made it 8-6 with 8:44 left before halftime.
Rowan scored again about two minutes later. She was followed by Quillinan and three more SU scorers to make it 13-6 at the break.
Martin’s second goal of the game came in the opening minute of the second half. Neither team scored again until 5:23 into the half, when Brady got the first of four straight goals for Syracuse for a 17-7 advantage. The Crimson continued to battle for the most of the half. A Simmons goal cut the SU lead to 18-11, but the Orange outscored Harvard 5-1 in the final 10 minutes.
Seven of freshman Katherine Martino’s 10 saves came after halftime. Simmons led Harvard with two ground balls. She, sophomore Ali McDonough and junior co-captain Lauren Bobzin caused two turnovers apiece. Bobzin and freshman Shannon Flynn each controlled three draws.
The Crimson faces its second ranked opponent in three days when it visits No. 15 Denver Tuesday.
