St. Mary's (Md.) Thumps Christopher Newport, 20-1
Norfolk, VA – The St. Mary's (Md.) College men's lacrosse team won its fourth straight as the Seahawks dominated Christopher Newport University, 20-1, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
St. Mary's took a 4-1 lead in the first period following a pair of goals from senior attacker Kyle Patton (Walkersville, MD/Walkersville).
The Seahawks (6-2) then exploded for eight goals in the next quarter to take a 12-1 advantage into halftime. Junior middie Cyrus Albertson (Chevy Chase, MD/St. John's College [DC]) netted two in the second.
SMCM tacked another seven following intermission as freshman middie Josh Hostetler (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) connected on two of his four goals in the third frame.
Hostetler notched the fourth period's lone goal, completing a feed from junior attacker John Oliver (Newtown, CT/Newtown) at 14:52.
Hostetler finished with a game- and season-high four goals for the Seahawks, while Albertson added five points on three goals and two assists. Oliver also had four points on a goal and three assists, while Patton had a hat trick and an assist.
St. Mary's freshman Justin Glover (Catonsville, MD/Centennial) won 19-of-25 face-offs and tallied three points on two goals and an assist, while freshman middie Ryan Alexander (Laurel, MD/Palotti) and junior attacker Stu Wright (Bethesda, MD/Good Counsel) also helped out the Seahawk offense with two points each.
Senior defenseman Michael Alcamo (Severna Park, MD/Severn) led all players with eight groundballs and two caused turnovers, while seniors Rich Barr (Salisbury, MD/Worcester Prep) and Matt Wiest (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal) and freshman Ben Craft (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) combined for nine saves.
Ryan Merrell had the Captains' (4-1) lone goal and Ray Ralph made eight stops in 45 minutes of play for CNU.
The Seahawks return to action Wednesday when they travel to Fredericksburg, VA to face the University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action.
