Quinnipiac Matches School Record, Rolls Past LIU, 16-8
Sophomore Nicole Fiore set four career highs and the Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team rolled past Long Island, 16-8, this afternoon to begin NEC action a perfect 2-0. Fiore finished with six goals and an assist for seven points. The Bobcats matched a school record for winning their fifth consecutive home game and have not lost in Hamden since Apr. 7, 2006. The record was set between Mar. 9 and Apr. 5, 2002. Additionally, eight Bobcats combined for 19 career highs in the contest.
Quinnipiac improves to 4-3 overall, 2-0 in NEC play. Long Island drops to 1-6 overall, 0-2 in NEC play.
Quinnipiac put the first three goals on the scoreboard in the opening 3:45 of the game and would never look back. Ashley Valentine found Fiore at 28:28 for the first goal.
Tiffany Manzi scored next at 27:03 with a helper from Fiore. It was Fiore's 14th point of the season which set a new career high for the sophomore.
Katy Delagi set up Valentine for the third Bobcat goal at 26:15 to make it 3-0. Valentine set a career high for points in a season on the play.
Long Island's Christie Wienckowski scored on a free position shot at 25:00 to make it 3-1, but Fiore answered with her second goal and third point of the contest at 21:26.
The Blackbirds made it 4-2 courtesy of All-NEC First Teamer Amy Rizzo scoring an unassisted goal.
Quinnipiac responded with three straight goals for the second time of the game to make it 7-2. Fiore completed her fourth hat trick of the season just 11:52 into the game when she was set up by Delagi. Fiore set two more career highs for goals in a season and points in a season on the play.
Freshman defender Brittany Hauser set up Manzi and Janelle Lopez, respectively, at 15:14 and 7:57. Hauser also set a career high for her second assist of the game on Lopez's goal and would add a third helper early in the second half.
Wienckowksi scored her second goal of the game to make it 7-3 in favor of the Bobcats with 43 seconds left to play in the half.
However, the Bobcats would have one more answer before the recesss. Kaitlyn Vennard was awarded a free position shot with 22 ticks left on the clock. She shot low and Kimberly Campbell made the save. Lopez picked up the ground ball to the left of the goal and set four career marks when she sent the ball past Campbell. It was the first multi-goal and multi-point game of her career and she also set career highs for points in a goals in a season (four) and points in a season (four). The recess commenced with the Bobcats holding an 8-3 lead.
Fiore set another career high for goals in a game when she scored her fourth just 21 seconds into the second half. Hauser added to a career afternoon with her third assist of the game.
Long Island cut the lead back to five at 9-4, but the Bobcats scored three goals in a span of just 18 seconds to catapult to a commanding 12-4 advantage.
Manzi started the flurry of Bobcat goals when she scored on a free position shot at 26:53.
Katie Latonick won the ensuing draw control and passed the ball downfield to identical twin sister Meghan Latonick. Meghan Latonick then found Fiore who was cutting towards the net inside the restraining line and she scored her fifth goal of the game at 26:44 and nine seconds after the Manzi tally.
Fiore then won the ensuing draw control, cruised downfield and fired a shot to the back of the net past Campbell just nine seconds after her previous goal. Long Island's Regan Teti was forced to call a timeout with 26:35 on the clock and her team trailing by eight goals.
