Bears Post First-ever Win over Franklin & Marshall, 9-8

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Mike Tori's (Springfield, PA/Springfield) man-up goal with 9:41 left in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference to lead Ursinus past Franklin & Marshall 9-8 in men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

The Bears' (4-2, 1-1 CC) win marks the first-ever victory over the Diplomats (3-3, 1-1 CC) program history. Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) netted a hat trick and Matt Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) came in the second half to make seven saves.

Anthony Tori (Springfield, PA/Springfield) scored a goal and added two assists, putting him 12 helpers away from reaching 100 for his career.

Kevin Kohl tallied a game-high four points with two goals and two assists for Franklin & Marshall.

Ursinus scored two goals in the fourth quarter to break a 7-all tie and hold on for its first conference win of the season.

Down 5-2, the Diplomats scored four straight goals in the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead at the 3:34 mark. Mangin finished a solo run with just 31 seconds left to make it even at halftime.

After the break, Jason Patterson (West Chester, PA/Unionville) took a feed from Tori and put the ball past Dan Coffman for the slight 7-6 lead, but Mark Hild answered back two minutes, 13 seconds later for the only other goal of the third quarter.

In the decisive stanza, Pat Nagle (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) hit Sean Tillman (Phoenix, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) less than two minutes into the fourth quarter and M. Tori buried his eventual game-winning shot on a man-up opportunity off a pass from Scott Boyle (Media, PA/Penncrest).

Cyrus Adams tallied a man-up goal for the Diplomats to get within one, but Orlando made four of his seven saves in the final 3:26 and stopped Franklin & Marshall on another extra-man advantage for the win.

Nagle and Seth Bakes (Barto, PA/Boyertown) each scored first-quarter goals for the Bears, along with Tori and Mangin to take a 4-2 lead.

Andrew Pepin (Medfield, MA/Medfield) grabbed three ground balls and caused three turnovers, while Kevin Wallace (Landerberg, PA/Avon Grove) scopped up three ground balls and forced two turnovers.

Ursinus returns to action on Wednesday against Washington. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
