Saratoga Springs, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College men's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of the third quarter in less than three minutes on the way to a 7-5 win over Amherst College, Tuesday at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds were down 3-2 at the half when Micah Hawes-Sivitz (Conway, Mass.) opened the thirds with his 11th goal of the season from Nick Coppola (Basking Ridge, N.J.) at 10:07. Coppola gave Skidmore a 4-3 lead at 8:03. Then Rob Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y.) scored goals nine seconds apart at 7:24 and 7:15 to put the Thoroughbreds in front for good, 6-3.

McNeil finished with two goals , while Coppola had a goal and three assists. Rob Martin (Holmes, N.Y.) had the other Thoroughbred goal.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team traveled a few short hours to upstate New York to face the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College in a midweek non-conference match-up. A third-quarter flurry from the T-Breds would prove to be too much, as Amherst fell 7-5.

Amherst entered the game with a 2-2 record, while Skidmore was still looking for its first win in its sixth try. The T-Breds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 75 seconds into the game on a quick goal from Rob Martin, with the assist going to Nick Coppola.

The Lord Jeffs tied the game up on a beautiful man-up goal from senior quad-captain Chris Hofmann (New Canaan, CT). Feeding Hofmann on the crease was classmate Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) with a no-look pass across the goal front.

The two squads remained deadlocked at one goal apiece for the next few minutes, with Skidmore breaking free with 4:53 left in the opening quarter on a short-range shot from a streaking Matt Ward. Before the face-off, Amherst caught a break as the referee found Ward's stick to be illegal, and took the goal off the board.

Skidmore took the lead again early in the second frame when Chuck McNeil hit the far corner with a hard shot from the left side of the box. Amherst tied the game at 2-2 with 8:55 left in the second quarter when John-Thomas Milone (Manhasset, NY) scooped up a ground ball and dropped it past Skidmore first-year John Capitani.

Amherst snagged its first lead of the game when first-year Thomas McDonnell (Manhasset, NY) put home Cherney's second assist of the day. Skidmore called a timeout with possession with 14 seconds remaining in the first half, hoping to set up a play to tie the game before the half. Some tough Amherst defense helped the Jeffs hold its 3-2 advantage into halftime.
