Clark Has Record Setting Day for Vermont in Victory
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont junior Emilie Clark (Calais, Vt.) set a new single-game school record with 14 points and tied the school marks for most goals (8) and assists (6) in a game to lead the Catamounts past visiting Siena, 19-8, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday at Moulton Winder Field.
"This win was a positive step forward for us as a team," said Vermont head coach Jen Johnson. "We'll look to carry the momentum we gained from today into our opening conference game against a strong UNH team on Saturday."
"We were able to make some big stops on the defensive end and I think our defensive unit's confidence was raised because of the solid play from Meaghan Hanley and Ali Trainor in our net. They both made some big saves for us. Offensively we were able to find a rhythm and our attackers were able to find the back of the net. Emilie quietly put together a great game to lead us offensively. Overall I am pleased with our performance today."
Vermont scored the first five goals of the game before Siena answered with back-to-back tallies to make the score 5-2 with 20:12 left in the first half. The two teams would trade goals over the next 10 minutes and Vermont would take a 9-5 lead into halftime. Clark scored the first two goals of the second half and the Catamounts controlled the play to out scored the Saints 10-3 in the stanza.
Sophomore Kristen Millar (Whitby, Ontario) added four goals and three assists, while teammates Tori Wasson (Lake Forest, Ill.), Becky Kenison (Woodstock, Vt.) and Ashleigh Wilson (Long Valley, N.J.) each scored a pair of goals. Hanley and Trainor combined to make 10 saves in the Vermont net. Ryan Tierney led the Saints with a hat trick and Christina Pampalone added a pair of goals. Heather Ely made 10 saves in the Siena net.
Vermont improves to 3-6 on the year, while Siena falls to 0-6. The Catamounts return to action on Saturday when they travel to New Hampshire for the America East opener. Game time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
