GWU Stumbles in Second Half Versus George Mason
WASHINGTON, DC – Junior Kristin Karcsh (Kennett Square, PA/Bishop Shanahan) tallied four goals and an assist, but the George Washington women's lacrosse team failed to maintain a pair of three-goal first-half leads and fell to visiting George Mason 14-11 at Mount Vernon Field on Wednesday.
GW (3-4) stormed out to leads of 4-1 and 5-2 behind a hat trick from freshman Taylor Donohue (Villanova, PA/Radnor) and two goals from junior Katelyn Honeyford (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown).
George Mason (5-3) whittled away at GW's early lead, scoring four of the final five goals of the half to pull even at the intermission at 6-6. GMU's Megan Udovich and Karcsh split goals to start the second half, but the Patriots took control of the game from there with five unanswered goals to take a 12-7 lead with 13:48 remaining.
Senior Kristina Harvey (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) halted the run with a free position goal, her 10th of the season, at the 12:47 mark, but the Colonials could pull no closer than three goals the rest of the way. Mason's Laura King scored her fourth goal of the game with 11:48 left to reopen a five-goal cushion.
Karcsh tacked on two more goals and junior Lindsay Melvin (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. Hebron) added an unassisted goal at the 11:12 mark to round out GW's scoring.
Harvey posted an assist to finish with two points on the afternoon. Honeyford pitched in four draw controls and three ground balls to go along with her two goals. Senior Molly Gannon (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) caused four turnovers and added three ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Garman (Baltimore, MD/Friends School) made six saves in cage for the Colonials. GW led in both shots (27-23) and ground balls (25-24), while both teams committed 22 turnovers.
King led Mason with five points on four goals and an assist. Melissa Venturi finished with four points on a hat trick and an assist, while Kelly Davis had two goals and a helper. Sara Longobucco and Roxie Alsruhe combined for 11 saves, with Alsruhe picking up the win.
GW hosts William & Mary at Mount Vernon Field on Friday at 4:00 pm before embarking on a five-game road swing that begins at Richmond on April 1 at 1:00 pm.

(March 28, 2007) – The George Mason women’s lacrosse team (5-3) got off to a rough start against the George Washington Colonials (3-4) on Wednesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field, facing an early deficit of 5-2 before scoring four of the final five goals in the first period to pull even at the break. The Patriots used a 6-1 run to start the second period to pull away and held on for a 14-11 victory.
Freshman Taylor Donohue and junior Katelyn Honeyford combined to score the first five goals of the game for George Washington. Honeyford scored the first two of the game and Donohue scored the next three in staking the Colonials to early first period leads of 4-1 and 5-2. After Donohue scored her third goal of the game with 11:04 remaining in the first period, George Mason’s defense held the Colonials’ duo scoreless for the remainder of the period and the game. George Washington scored only one more goal in the period, while Mason scored four in the final 9:48 – including two from junior attacker Laura King – to even the score at six heading into the break.
The teams traded goals to begin the second period of action. Freshman attacker Megan Udovich scored a free-position goal 52 seconds into the period to put the Patriots on top, but the Colonials’ answered with a free-position goal of their own by junior Kristin Karcsh to even the score at seven. Freshman midfielder Kelly Davis then scored the next two goals of the game as George Mason went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-7 lead with 13:48 remaining.
