Second-Half Rally Lifts Boston U. Past Boston C., 9-7
BOSTON - The Boston University lacrosse team used a 5-1 run during the final 20 minutes of regulation to post a 9-7 victory over cross-town rival Boston College on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field. Sophomore Sarah Dalton scored three goals and added an assist to help the Terriers snap a three-game skid and improve to 3-4 on the year.
The Eagles led 4-2 at the break and earned a three-goal lead with the first tally of the second half. The Terriers, however, scored six of the game's next seven goals to take a 8-6 lead with over 11 minutes left in regulation. BC got within one with a minute to play, but the Terriers claimed the ensuing draw and tacked on an insurance tally in the closing seconds.
Four Terriers had multi-goal efforts, as junior Lauren Morton and freshmen McKinley Curro and Traci Landy each scored twice to complement Dalton's hat trick. Junior goalkeeper Jenna Golden stopped seven of the Eagles' final nine shots on goal and finished the contest with nine saves.
The Eagles, who fell to 4-5, got two goals apiece from graduate student Elizabeth Kadison and sophomores Emily Hannigan and Jenna McCabe. In goal, sophomore Katie Monaghan made six saves. Each team earned nine draw controls, but the Terriers collected six of the final seven draws to aid the rally. BU outshot BC, 25-23, and held an 18-13 edge in ground balls.
Curro opened the scoring 3:33 into the contest and assisted on a goal by Landy less than eight minutes later, but those would be the only tallies by the Terriers in the opening half. The Eagles turned in a 5-1 run spanning the halves, as Hannigan scored two of her team's first three goals and a tally by sophomore Lauren Fitzpatrick with 3:40 left in the first half gave the visitors a 4-2 lead entering the break. McCabe capped the run exactly one minute into the second half.
Down 5-2, the Terriers ended a scoreless streak of over 17 minutes when Dalton scored back-to-back goals to get the home team within one. Kadison helped BC regain a two-goal cushion with her second tally of the game with 20:02 left in regulation. The Terriers dominated play for the remainder of the contest, scoring four goals in a span of under two minutes and keeping the Eagles scoreless for nearly 19 minutes.
After Dalton assisted on a goal by Landy with 13:25 left in the second half, Curro tied the game 39 seconds later. Morton claimed the ensuing draw control and drove down the field before drawing a foul in the arc. The junior converted a free-position attempt, giving BU its first lead in exactly 32 minutes. Dalton capped the four-goal run with her third marker of the contest.
Neither team scored for the next 10 minutes of action, but BC made things interesting when McCabe scored off a pass from sophomore Margot Spatola with 1:04 left on the clock. Holding onto an 8-7 lead, BU got a crucial draw control from junior Molly Collins and possessed the ball for the final minute before Morton sealed the victory by scoring with five seconds left.
BU will return to action on Saturday, March 31, when it welcomes UMBC to Nickerson Field for its America East opener. Game time is set for noon.
