Washington & Lee Stuns No. 4 Middlebury, 9-7
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee senior goalkeeper Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) posted 14 saves in leading the Generals to a 9-7 victory over fourth-ranked Middlebury in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.
The game began at Wilson Field, but was delayed by nearly two hours due to lightning before resuming on the W&L Turf Field later in the evening. Once play resumed, Middlebury junior attackman Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn./Taft) scored the game's first two goals en route to four first-half scores, but the Generals kept pace and the teams entered the halftime break tied at 5-5.
Washington and Lee (5-3) scored the lone goal of the third period at the 13:29 mark on an unassisted tally by senior midfielder Charlie Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton), but the Panthers took the lead back by scoring the first two goals of the fourth quarter, including a man-down goal by sophomore attackman Tom Petty (Newburyport, Mass./Phillips Exeter), for a 7-6 advantage. However, the Generals bounced back with three straight goals to post their fourth-straight victory.
Senior midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) tied the game at 7-7 with 7:48 left off an assist from sophomore attackman Tim Skeen (Baltimore, Md./Towson) and freshman attackman Will Keigler (Timonium, Md./Gilman) notched the game-winner with man-up tally at the 6:29 mark. Senior Lee McLaughlin (Rockbridge Baths, Va./Episcopal) added an insurance goal when he scored unassisted with just 3:37 remaining.
Ryan led the Generals with two goals and one assist, while Clarke and sophomore attackman Seth Fishman (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Haverford) notched two goals each. Sophomore midfielder Seldon Clarke (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) also chipped in with 15 faceoff victories in 20 attempts.
Middlebury (4-1) was paced by Cabrera's four goals and one goal and one assist each from Petty and senior midfielder Will Simpson (Chevy Chase, Md./St. Albans). Senior goalkeeper Alex Palmisano (Southport, Conn./Holderness) recorded eight saves between the pipes.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:00 pm contest.
