No. 14 Penn Rolls by No. 12 Johns Hopkins, 12-4

BALTIMORE, MD - The #14 Penn Quakers (7-1) came out firing Wednesday night and defeated #12 Johns Hopkins (5-4) 12-4 at Homewood Field. It was the Quakers first ever win over the Blue Jays, snapping a five-game winless streak. Four goals are the fewest for Hopkins since April 12, 2003.

Penn struck just 33 seconds in when Rachel Manson connected with Chrissy Muller from behind the Blue Jays cage. The Quakers made it 2-0 at 4:20 after Melissa Lehman found the twine on a low shot that beat freshman goalie Lizzie O'Ferrall (Baltimore, MD/Mount De Sales). Both defenses locked down and it was more than 13 minutes before another goal was scored. Ali DeLuca scored on a free position shot with 12:17 to play in the first half, giving Penn a 3-0 lead.

Hopkins finally got on the board when senior Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) drove down the left side and fired a high shot that beat Quaker goalie Sarah Waxman. Penn responded with an 8-0 run that spanned until the 12:00 minute mark of the second half. Five different Quakers scored during the run as they pushed out to an 11-1 lead. The Blue Jays offense got going in the final 13 minutes as they outscored the Quakers 3-1.

Junior Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) ended Penn's run with 12:24 to play, scoring on a low shot to the left post. Becca Edwards came back with her second goal of the night with 7:52 to play, making it a 12-2 game. Hopkins then got back-to-back goals from junior Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) to account for the final 12-4 score.

O'Ferrall finished with a career-high nine saves in net for Hopkins, while Waxman had 10 for Penn. Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, April 1 when the #15/16 Denver Pioneers visit Homewood. Game time is set for noon.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 14 Penn women's lacrosse team rode a smothering defense and a methodical attack to a 12-4 win over No. 12 Johns Hopkins Wednesday evening at Homewood Field. The win for the Quakers (7-1, 2-0 Ivy) was the first in program history over Hopkins (5-4, 1-0 ALC) in six meetings.

Goalie Sarah Waxman worked a gem, making nine saves, while defender Hilary Renna held Mary Key, the nation's leading scorer with 7.88 points per game, to a goal and two assists.

Penn led 7-1 at halftime, with six different scorers notching goals in the first half. The Quakers' lead ballooned to as many as 10 goals twice in the second half.

"It was just the best team effort I've ever seen," said Head Coach Karin Brower. "The defense played so well and was all together, and Waxman was fantastic. She had some huge saves."

The Quakers wasted no time getting on the board with Chrissy Muller's goal from Rachel Manson 33 seconds into the game. Ali DeLuca nearly scored five minutes later when her shot caromed off the crossbar, but Melissa Lehman scooped up the rebound and scored seconds later. DeLuca scored on a free position with 12:17 to goal to put Penn up 3-0.

On the other end of the field, the Quaker defense was dominant as goalie Sarah Waxman denied Key twice in the first 15 minutes. But Key couldn't be stopped as she got the Blue Jays their first goal with 7:21 remaining. The Quakers, though, answered with a 4-0 run to end the half. Off a free position attempt, Lehman passed left to a streaking Manson, who buried the shot to put Penn up 4-1 with 4:20 to go.

Chelsea Kocis added another on an eight-meter before Emma Spiro scored on a runner with 45 seconds to go. Hopkins won the draw, but Kocis caused the turnover and scored on the breakaway with 21 seconds left. The start of the second half wouldn't be any different. Kocis completed her first career hat trick on an unassisted goal, and DeLuca added another seconds later. Becca Edwards made it 10-1 with her unassisted tally five minutes into the half. Spiro kept the run alive with a free position goal midway through the half.
