Ursinus Scores at 0:11 to Upset #6 Washington Coll., 7-6
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Mike Stein (Springfield, PA/Springfield) scored a man-up goal off a pass from Anthony Tori (Springfield, PA/Springfield) with just 11 seconds left in game to help Ursinus upset No. 6 Washington 7-6 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday night. For the second straight game, the Bears (5-2, 2-1 CC) defeated two conference rivals by one goal while posting their first-ever victory over a ranked opponent in five-year history of the program. Matt Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) was instrumental in goal, turning away 17 shots.
The Shoremen’s (7-2, 2-1 CC) Chris Read netted a hat trick and Kolyn Kirby added two goals in their first conference loss. Gordon Cohen made six saves. Ursinus never trailed and capitalized on two out of four extra-man opportunities, including in the final seconds for the game winner to snap a four-game losing streak to Washington.
With the score tied at 5-all after three quarters, Tori finished a solo run with 4:07 remaining in the game to take the 6-5 lead. The Bears held Washington scoreless through its man-up advantage at the 2:29 mark, before Read fired a shot from five feet out and past Orlando with one minute, 14 seconds on the clock. Defender Eric Hoffman (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) won the ensuing face-off and just under a minute to play the Shoremen were hit with a one-minute penalty for slashing. With 11 seconds left, Tori gathered a pass at the top of the circle and found Stein near the crease for the game-winning goal.
The Bears got on the scoreboard first on a shot from Scott Boyle (Media, PA/Penncrest) with just 3:10 gone in the first quarter. Washington converted just one of its 16 shots in the first half, getting the lone goal from Chris Mancini on a pass from Thom Cecere at the 6:44 mark of the opening quarter. Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) fed Tori on an extra-man goal and Stein tallied his first marker of the game to help Ursinus take a 3-1 halftime lead.
Ten seconds into the third quarter, Mike Hughes took the ball from the Shoremen’s defensive end and drove straight down the middle of the field to find a wide-open Read to cut the lead to 3-2. From there, Mangin and Kirby went goal-for-goal, scoring two apiece before Read buried his shot with five seconds left in the third quarter to knot the game at 5-all.
Washington held a 36-24 shot advantage in the game, but the Bears edged the Shoremen in face-offs and ground balls. Defensively, Derrin Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) caused four turnovers and grabbed three ground balls, while Seth Bakes (Barto, PA/Boyertown) won five face-offs.
Ursinus returns to action on Saturday at McDaniel. Game time is 3:00 p.m.

The Bears improved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 7-2 and 2-1 with the loss.
Ursinus held a 3-1 lead at halftime. Scott Boyle put the Bears on the board first with a goal with 11:50 left in the first quarter, but the Shoremen tied things up when freshman defenseman Thom Cecere (Edgewater, MD/St. Mary's) found senior attackman Chris Mancini (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) for a goal with 6:44 left in the first. Ursinus scored the only two goals of the second quarter as Tori scored an extra-man goal off a Dane Mangin assist with 10:25 remaining and Stein scored off a Pat Nagle feed with 7:16 left before the break.
