St. Mary's (Md.) Falls 8-5 to Mary Washington

Fredericksburg, VA – The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team handed St. Mary's (Md.) College an 8-5 loss to bring the Seahawks' four-game winning streak to a halt Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference play.

St. Mary's notched the first period's lone goal on freshman middie Josh Hostetler (Clarksville, MD/River Hill) unassisted goal at 8:44.

The Seahawks (6-3, 2-2 CAC) scored first in the second period as junior attacker Pat Oliphant (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) found the back of the net at 13:31 off a feed from junior attacker John Oliver (Newtown, CT/Newtown) for a 2-0 lead. Mary Washington's Keith Sweeney closed the gap to 2-1 with his unassisted goal at 11:06 and then Brent Fisk knotted the game at 2-2 with his goal at 1:42.

Just 17 seconds into the third frame, Mary Washington took its first lead of the game on a goal by Scott Fletcher. From this point on, the Eagles (3-6, 2-3 CAC) never trailed as they added two more unanswered goals for a 5-2 advantage with 10:54 left in the game. Two goals by freshman middie Ryan Alexander (Laurel, MD/Palotti) helped the Seahawks pull within 6-4 heading into the fourth quarter.

A goal by junior attacker Stu Wright (Bethesda, MD/Good Counsel) was sandwiched between two Mary Washington scores as the Eagles outscored SMCM, 2-1, for the game's final of 8-5. After the Eagles' last goal at 3:24, St. Mary's committed three turnovers and were unable to get a settled offense going.

Matt Richman-Raphael dominated the face-offs, winning 13-of-17 and scooping up six ground balls. Defensively Gabe Butler had four caused turnovers and Peter Lytle had seven loose ball pickups.

Fletcher finished with two goals and an assist, while Fisk added a pair.

Alexander was the Seahawks' leading scorer with two goals. Senior defensemen Ryan DiPasquale (Joppa, MD/Boys' Latin) and Michael Alcamo (Severna Park, MD/Severn) paced the defense with DiPasquale having four caused turnovers and Alcamo recording seven ground balls.

Eric Everitt turned away nine shots for the Eagles and had two ground balls. Senior Rich Barr (Salisbury, MD/Worcester Prep) made eight stops in the loss.

The Seahawks return to action Saturday when they host York (Pa.) College in Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 at Seahawk Stadium.
