Hartwick Downs Utica, 15-10
ONEONTA, N.Y. – Dan Hushion (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Pat McCormack (Camillus, N.Y.) and Lee Austin (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored three goals to pace Hartwick to a convincing 15-10 victory over Utica, Wednesday evening in Empire 8 men's lacrosse action at All-Weather Field.
Hartwick, which improved to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in league action, took the lead for good in the second period by outscoring the Pioneers 5-2. With the game tied at 3-3 after the first quarter, Utica took its last lead of the contest as David O'Connell (Syracuse, N.Y.) opened the scoring at 14:05. Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, N.J.) triggered a run of five consecutive goals by Hartwick with his seventh of the year at 11:29. Hushion gave the Hawks the lead for good seconds after at 10:54 of the second. McCormack followed Hushion's scored with another score 23 seconds later. Hushion scored once again and Steve Caramello (Duxbury, Mass.) punched in his second goal of the game to help give the Hawks an 8-5 lead at intermission.
The Hawks out scored Utica 3-1 in the third to up the advantage to 11-6. McCormack opened the scoring in the third at 9:10. After the Pioneers' Tom Collins (West Genessee, N.Y.) countered with his second goal of the night at 6:24 of the third, Austin and McCormack closed the period with scores at 1:36 and 0:49 respectively.
The lead grew to as many as 14-6 as the Hawks posted three of the first four tallies in the fourth quarter, two scored by Austin at 9:36 and at 6:28. The senior finished with a four-point evening versus the Pioneers, the same squad in which he registered a six-point afternoon (two goals, four assists) against a year ago.
Besides Hushion's three goals, the junior added two helpers for a five-point evening. Dan Giovinazzo (Waltham, Mass.) and Matt Shellard (Latham, N.Y.) each posted their first goals of the year in the victory.
The duo of Collins and O'Connell accounted for seven of the team's 10 goals. Collins, a former teammate of Hartwick's McCormack at Camillus High, tallied four goals, while O'Connell finished with three. Utica fell to 4-4 overall, 0-1 in league action.
Jason Fautas (Holtsville, N.Y.) tallied three saves in the first half of the contest en route to claiming the victory. Anthony Carnevale (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) recorded 12 saves in the defeat.
Hartwick returns to action Saturday afternoon as it travels to square off with St. John Fisher. The Hawks will be looking to atone for a 13-11 loss to the Cardinals in 2006.
