Donnelly Scores in 2OT to Lift Assumption over Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. -- Senior Neil Donnelly (Boylston) scored his second goal of the game for the Greyhounds with two minutes to go in the second overtime to lift Assumption to a 7-6 win over the Bentley men's lacrosse team on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Multi-Sport Stadium. The Falcons fall to 2-2 (1-1 NE-10) with the loss and have now seen three of their four games this season go into overtime and two of those into double overtime. The Greyhounds improve to 1-3 (1-2 NE-10) with their first win of the season.

After a scoreless first quarter, Bentley finally broke through first just nine seconds into the second with a goal from senior Bob Catala (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Yorktown HS). Assumption then found their offense, scoring three unanswered goals before senior midfielder Dalton Van Hatcher (Tigard, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) put the Falcons back in the lead by assisting freshman Kevin Gould (Duxbury/Duxbury HS) on a tally, then scoring two goals of his own, all in a three-minute stretch to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead midway through the third quarter.

The streaky play continued as it was then the Greyhounds' turn to score three straight, with junior Matt Klaskin (Norfolk) putting Assumption up 6-4 with nine minutes to go. The Falcons made another push in regulation as Van Hatcher set up Gould again with four minutes left, then sophomore Chris Woods (Duxbury/Sandwich HS) scored with just 32 seconds on the clock to tie the game and send the contest to overtime.

The first overtime produced no resolution, but freshman Kevin Klaskin (Norfolk) set up Donnelly for the game-winning goal halfway through the second extra frame to send the Greyhounds off with the win.

Sophomore Mike Molk (Danvers) and Matt Klaskin each scored a pair of goals for Assumption and senior Peter Reynolds (Hamden, Conn.) added a tally.

Junior goalkeeper Chris Bird (North Andover) made 17 saves for Assumption, while sophomore Kris Dambach (Chester, N.J./West Morris Central HS) stopped 12 shots at the other end for Bentley as Assumption outshot Bentley by a 32-29 margin.

The Falcons are back in action on Saturday when they return home to host No. 10 Adelphi at noon.
