Wingate Rallies to Top Queens, 10-9
Charlotte, N.C.----The Wingate University men's lacrosse team scored the last seven goals of the game to take a 10-9 NCAA Division II victory over Queens University of Charlotte Wednesday night at the Queens Sports Complex in Marion Diehl Park.
With the victory, Wingate improves to 5-3 overall. Queens is 3-6 overall. The Bulldogs host Limestone College Saturday at 2 p.m. The Royals entertain Catawba College Saturday at the same time.
A goal by Queens sophomore attack Zach Jacobs (Linthicum Heights, Md.) gave the hosts a 9-3 advantage with eight minutes to play in the third quarter. The Royals would not score again as the Bulldogs mounted a huge rally.
Wingate senior midfielder Bryan Safarik (Vancouver, B.C.) scored the game-winning goal with 3:18 to play in the fourth quarter. Safarik and junior midfielder Stephen Torkington (Coronado, Calif.) scored three goals each to lead the Bulldog offense.
In addition, Wingate junior attack Kyle Costello (Wilmington, N.C.) and freshman midfielder Tommy Heberer (Woodbridge, Va.) recorded two goals and one assist each. Queens senior midfielder David Overberg (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore midfielder Randy Jones (Bel Air, Md.) collected two goals and one assist apiece.
Bulldog junior goalkeeper David Suthers (Manassas, Va.) recorded 14 saves for the visitors. The reigning Deep South Conference Defensive Player of the Week, Suthers did not face a shot in the fourth quarter as the Wingate defense stifled the Queens offense. Royals senior netminder Joel Heimbigner (Poway, Calif.) notched 11 saves. Both goalkeepers went the distance Wednesday night.
