Scranton Falls to Lycoming, 15-11

SCRANTON, Pa.—Junior attacker Megan Wallenhorst (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) scored five of her game-high eight goals in the second-half to lift Lycoming College to a come-from-behind 15-11 victory over The University of Scranton in Middle Atlantic Conference action Thursday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Freshman midfielder Christi Karr (Lansdale, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy Academy) added three goals and sophomore midfielders Sarah Wingerden (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and Crystal Cody (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) contributed two apiece as the Warriors overcame a 7-4 halftime deficit to improve to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the MAC.

Sophomore midfielder Diana Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) scored a career-high five goals and senior midfielder Jackie Messantonio (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarch) added four goals and an assist for Scranton, which suffered its second straight loss to fall to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in league play.

After spotting the Warriors an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals by Karr, the Royals got untracked offensively as Messantonio and Rocklein combined for six goals during a 17-minute span to give Scranton a 6-3 lead with three minutes left before intermission. After Wallenhorst scored an unassisted goal with 1:08 remaining, Rocklein took a pass from Messantonio and converted it into a goal with just seven seconds remaining to give Scranton a four-goal lead by intermission. Scranton won 9 of the 12 draw controls in the first-half.

The Warriors did a much better job on the draw controls early in the second-half and Wallenhorst scored two goals during a 4-1 rally in the opening five minutes of the second-half to draw even at 8-8. Scranton took its last two leads of the game on unassisted goals by freshman midfielder Heather Melone (Wall, N.J./Wall Township), the last of which came with 21:14 remaining, 10-9.

Cody and Wallenhorst combined for four goals over a nine-minute span to give the Warriors the lead for good, 13-10, before Rocklein answered with a goal off an assist by freshman attacker Kristen Marquino (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) to cut Lycoming's lead to two, 13-11, with 8:41 remaining.

The Warriors played keep-away down the stretch after Wallenhorst scored back-to-back goals with 7:04 and 6:02 left to set the final score, 15-11. Junior attacker Heather Suit (Annapollis Md./Broadneck) finished with four assists and junior goalkeeper Kristina Peacock (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) had a game-high eight saves for Lycoming, which held a 35-25 advantage in shots and a 16-14 edge in ground balls.

Senior attacker Kaitlyn Mimnaugh (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) had two assists and junior attacker Erin Quinn (Baltimore, Md./The Institute of Notre Dame) and Melone contributed one apiece for Scranton.

The Royals will take on Messiah College in Middle Atlantic Conference action this Saturday, March 31, in Grantham, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
