Elizabethtown Blasts Widener 18-6 for Best Start Ever

CHESTER, Pa. --- Elizabethtown's best season start in its history continued Thursday with an 18-6 blowout road win over Middle Atlantic Conference rival Widener University. The victory improves the Blue Jays to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the MAC, while Widener drops to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

Elizabethtown vaulted to a 9-3 lead by halftime, and the Blue Jays scored the game's first six goals unanswered. The Blue Jays led 12-6 with 16 minutes left in the second half before finishing the game with another 6-0 run. Elizabethtown out-shot Widener 42-16, and the Blue Jays held a 24-18 edge in ground balls.

Stephanie Kreis (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll School) led Elizabethtown in goals with five and in caused turnovers with three. Katie Foley (Palmyra, NJ/Holy Cross) added four goals and assisted another. Katie Caprinolo (Jarrettsville, MD/North Harford) scored three times and had two assists, and she tied for the team lead in draw controls with four. Anna Ford (Salisbury, MD/homeschooled) also had four draw controls, and she scored a pair of goals. Megan Byrnes (Lutherville, MD/Towson) led Elizabethtown in assists with three and scored two goals, and Kelsea Kozak (Brookhaven, PA/Sun Valley) scored two goals and had one assist. Carly Goetting (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Borough) assisted a pair of Etown goals, and Danielle Schaffer (Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) had one assist. Alisha Sangrey (Columbia, PA/Hempfield) led the Blue Jays in ground balls with five.

Elizabethtown goaltender Jenn Hawkins (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) played the first 49:26 and made seven saves with six goals allowed. Becca Watkins (Herndon, VA/Westfield) took over in the net for the final 10:34, made one save and allowed no goals.

Widener's leading scorer was Grace Cavanaugh with a pair of strikes. Kerri Schulz led Widener in assists with two and scored one goal. Widener goalie Brianna Tarry led the Pride in ground balls with five and in caused turnovers with five, and she made 14 saves.

Elizabethtown will return to action at home Saturday, March 31 against Middle Atlantic Conference rival and 2006 MAC playoff semifinalist Drew University in a 1:00 p.m. game.
