Perno Leads Rangers in Thriller Over King's, 14-13
Lindsey Perno scored the Rangers' final two goals including the game-winner as Drew held off King's 14-13 in Pennsylvania. Perno finished the game with four goals and an assist as Drew rallied from a 6-5 halftime deficit in an exciting MAC contest. Perno's tally with 1:45 remaining off a Courtney Cunningham feed proved the game winner.
Drew got on the board first as Perno turned in a Meghan Santaniello pass just over two minutes into the contest. King's replied with three of their own including the first from Michelle O'Brien. Alex Weber Reitz gave the Rangers a brief recourse before King's scored another three with only Allie Bailly responding. Down 6-3 with under a minute left in the half was not in the plans for the Rangers, but goals by Bailly and Megan Fogarty (assisted by Perno) in the final 33 seconds of the period brought Drew to within one.
In the second, the fireworks continued as Sarah Veneski scored just over a minute in for the Monarchs. This time the Rangers answered swiftly with four straight goals; AWR, Bailly, Perno and Cunningham all tallying. The game swung back in King's direction as O'Brien netted twice with a Keri Niedt goal sandwiched between. Samantha Silver and Sarah Veneski traded goals after that burst. If you've lost track, it's now 11-10 King's with ten minutes remaining in the game.
The Rangers speed continued to cause King's problems as Cunningham and Bailly gave Drew the lead back with unassisted goals. Veneski struck back to tie the game at 4:40.
A All-MAC second team selection last season, Perno continued her strong campaign for the premier honor just twelve seconds after Veneski had equalized. After a tense three minutes, Perno led the Rangers to victory with a goal from Cunningham's pass with 1:45 left in the game. Veneski made sure the final 90 seconds were uncomfortable for the Rangers, but the defense held as Drew improved to 6-1 on the season.
One of the key's to the game was the Ranger defensive effort on the Monarchs' leading scorer Lindsay Sabo. Sabo was held to just a goal and an assist by the Drew D, helping to prove that the appropriate way to spell the name is with an "e".
The Rangers now stand at 6-1 and 3-0 in the MAC with a trip to E'Town up next on Saturday.
