No. 2 UNC Comes Back to Top No. 7 Georgetown, 8-6

CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team spotted Georgetown a 5-1 first-half lead before storming back to defeat the Hoyas, 8-6, on Friday evening at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels ended the game on a 7-1 run. Kristen Taylor scored three times for Carolina in the win, while Megan Bosica scored twice.

With the victory, No. 2-ranked Carolina improved to 9-1 this season and bounced back from last Saturday's loss at Maryland. No. 7 Georgetown fell to 6-3 with the loss.

In the first half, Georgetown jumped out to an early 5-1 lead behind goals from five different players. Georgetown held an early 12-1 advantage in shot attempts, but by the end of the half UNC had cut the shot tally to 20-12. The Tar Heels battled back late in the half to make it 5-4 Hoyas at the break. Bosica and Taylor both scored twice for Carolina before halftime.

In the second half, Taylor scored on a free position shot at the 23:25 mark to tie the score at 5-5. After Zan Morley scored for the Hoyas to make it 6-5 Georgetown, Carolina scored the last three goals of the game.

Veteran Lindsay Higgins scored an unassisted goal on a spin move in front of the net to tie it at 6-6, then Erica LaGrow scored what would prove to be the game-winner off a pretty pass from Melissa McCarthy with 5:41 left to play in the game. Kelly Taylor added an insurance goal in the final two minutes.

Carolina will return to action on Sunday afternoon with an Atlantic Coast Conference contest against Boston College at noon at Fetzer Field.

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The No. 7 Georgetown University women's lacrosse dropped an 8-6 decision on the road at No. 2 North Carolina at Fetzer Field on Friday night. The Hoyas endured through a 29-minute scoring drought over the first and second halves and fall to 6-3 on the year. UNC improves to 9-1.

Seniors Coco Stanwick (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and Brittany Baschuk (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge) each recorded a goal and an assist for GU. Junior Patty Piotrowicz (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh) had a season-high four ground balls. Maggie Koch (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside) finished with seven saves for the Hoyas.

"It was a hard fought game on both sides," said Hoya head coach Ricky Fried. "There were plenty of momentum swings but UNC did what they need to do."

Stanwick won the game's opening draw and on the offensive set, found Sutton who scored the game's first goal at 28:30. GU controlled most of the offensive possessions through the first nine-plus minutes, outshooting the Tar Heels 11-1. After Koch made a save, the Hoyas cleared and Bunny O'Reilly (Blue Bell, Pa./Springside) scored after taking a pass from Stanwick at 21:37.

Stanwick made it 3-0 in favor of the Hoyas at 20:43 on a free position after a shooting space foul by UNC. Freshman Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) scored with an assist going to Bashuk at 19:35 after Koch made a save on a UNC free position shot. Megan Bosica netted a goal after a feed from Chrissy Rude at 17:354 for a 4-1 GU.

Baschuk extended the Georgetown lead to 5-1 at 11:27 on a pretty spin move from six yards out. Kristen Taylor scored after taking a beautiful feed through traffic by Julia Ryan at 8:43. Megan Bosica scored unassisted at 4:51, zipping a goal to the upper with hand corner of the net, closing the Hoya lead to 5-3. Taylor then scored at 4:18 after Jenn Cook won the next draw control. Georgetown took a 5-4 lead into halftime. The Hoyas have not trailed at the break all season.
