No. 9 Princeton Routs Cornell, 18-9, in Ivy Opener

ITHACA, N.Y. -- No. 9 Princeton ran out to an 8-0 first half lead and cruised to an 18-9 victory over Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field. Katie Lewis-Lamonica and Ashley Amo each had four goals and an assist for the Tigers, who improved to 4-3 overall (1-0 Ivy).

Three players recorded multi-goal games for the Big Red, with junior Katherine Simmons leading the way with two goals, an assist, three caused turnover and three ground balls in the loss. Cornell slipped to 2-6 overall (1-2 Ivy).

The Tigers jumped out early and never really let the home team back in, a far cry from the meeting between the two programs two seasons ago that went into sudden death overtime only to see the Tigers claim a 9-8 win.

Draw controls continued to be a problem for Cornell, which was nearly doubled up (19-10) in a sloppy contest that featured 46 turnovers and 25 fouls. The Tigers held a 33-26 edge in shots, including a 15-9 advantage in the first 30 minutes.

Senior Margaux Viola joined Simmons with a three-point day (two goals, assist), while Charlotte Schmidlapp (two goals), Alison McKeown (two assists) and Courtney Farrell (goal, assist) also had multi-point afternoons. Sophomore goalkeeper Renee Hughes made eight saves in the loss and added three ground balls.

Besides Lewis-Lamonica and Amo's heroics, Kathleen Miller also had three goals and two assists to go along with two draws and two caused turnovers. Christine Casaceli came off the bench to record a hat trick and an assist for a four-point night. Holly McGarvie won a game-high five draws to lead the Princeton attack.

Amo had all five of her points in the first 21:29 as part of the 8-0 run to open the contest. The Big Red finally dented the scoreboard with 2:27 left in the half when Viola found the back of the net, then a quick pass off the draw helped Farrell find Schmidlapp alone in front of the cage to make it 8-2 just 14 seconds later.

The Big Red scored two of the first three goals after halftime to force a Tiger timeout at 9-4, but the Tigers regained control with five of the game's next six goals, going up by as many as nine (17-8) with under six minutes left.

The Big Red will attempt to get back on track when it visits 2006 NCAA national runner-up Dartmouth on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.

ITHACA, NY -- The defending Ivy League champion Princeton women's lacrosse team left no doubt about its early Ivy League intentions in 2007, scoring the game's first eight goals on the way to an 18-9 win over Cornell Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.

The Tigers (4-3, 1-0 Ivy), who defeated Cornell for the 19th straight year in the regular season and the 20th straight time overall, held the Big Red (2-6, 1-2 Ivy) off the scoreboard for the first 28 minutes of the game. By that time, Princeton held an 8-0 lead behind four goals from junior Ashley Amo, including three straight in a five-minute span midway through the half.

Katie Lewis-Lamonica's second goal gave Princeton the 8-0 lead with six minutes left in the first half. Cornell, which trailed 8-2 at halftime, never got closer than a five-goal deficit in the second half.

Lewis-Lamonica and Amo each finished the game with four goals, while Kathleen Miller and Christine Casaceli each scored three times. Miller, who also had two assists, moved into ninth place all-time at Princeton with 166 career points. The Tigers won 19 of the game's 29 draws, including five draw controls from Holly McGarvie. Princeton outshot the Big Red 33-26, including 15-9 in the decisive first half.
