WATERVILLE, Maine ­-- Dan Schupack (Cheshire, Conn.) scored with 3:06 left in the second overtime period to power the Colby College men’s lacrosse team to a 13-12 upset win over fourth-ranked Middlebury College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

Ironically, Colby’s (2-4, 1-2 NESCAC) last win over Middlebury came in a 13-12 home win back in 1998. The Panthers are the six-time defending NESCAC champs and have won every league title since the conference began the playoff system in 2001.

Schupack broke in from the right side on a run and ripped a high shot that beat Middlebury goalie Alex Palmisano (Southport, Conn.). The Mules scored two goals in the final 2:12 of regulation to send the game to overtime. Drew Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass.) blasted a long shot with 2:12 left and then first-year attacker Whit McCarthy (Darien, Conn.) got the biggest goal of his young collegiate career with just 38.4 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

Colby took a 4-2 lead after the first quarter, but Middlebury (4-2, 2-1 NESCAC) exploded for eight unanswered goals in the second quarter for a 10-4 margin at halftime. The Panthers went up 11-4 about three minutes into the third quarter, but Colby scored six unanswered goals the rest of the quarter to make it 11-10. Nick Bastis (Old Greenwich, Conn.) tallied for Middlebury with 13:53 left in the fourth quarter, but neither team could manage a goal until Piekarski’s goal with 2:12 left.

Ryan Scott (Columbia, N.J.) had four goals to lead Colby. Rory Murphy (Brunswick, Maine) added two goals and one assist, Caddy Brooks (Darien, Conn.) had one goal and two assists and Schupack had two goals. McCarthy, Piekarski, Todd Boertzel (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Zach Goodnough (Brunswick, Maine) also tallied for the winners.

Scott had two stunning goals in the third quarter to give the Mules momentum. After Colby had just scored to make it 11-5, Palmisano was attempting a pass just to the right of his cage when Scott came from behind and deflected the ball into the net. Scott's other goal came with 2:23 left in the quarter on a low, diving shot with defenders in his face.

Jim Cabrera (Old Greenwich, Conn.) led the Panthers with three goals and three assists, while Mike Stone (Boston, Mass.) had three goals.
