Seventh-Ranked Wesleyan Stops Bowdoin, 7-3
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The ninth-ranked Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team held Bowdoin College scoreless for the final 21:33 in a 7-3 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 7-1 (1-1 NESCAC) while Bowdoin drops to 3-4 (1-2). The loss is the third-straight defeat for the Polar Bears, who had not lost three consecutive games since March of 2003.
Dan Latzman, Mike Hines and Jason Ben-Eliyahu notched first-quarter goals to give the Cardinals an early 3-1 advantage as Harry Ashforth scored the lone Polar Bear tally. Matt Chadwick cut the Wesleyan advantage to 3-2 with a goal early in the second quarter, but the Cardinals answered at 4:24, courtesy of Jon Killeen. Bowdoin had a man-up advantage late in the half (on the only penalty of the contest), but failed to take advantage as Wesleyan carried a 5-3 lead into intermission.
Russ Follansbee scored at 9:47 of the third quarter for Wesleyan, which earned a reply from Bowdoin's Matt Legg just three minutes later, giving the Cardinals a 5-3 lead heading into the final quarter. Bowdoin out-shot the visitors 9-5 in the final frame, but a pair of late goals from Ben-Eliyahu and Hines sealed the victory for Wesleyan, who has won three-straight over the Polar Bears for the first time since the 1968-1970 seasons.
