No. 14 Cortland Drops 11-10 Decision at Cabrini
RADNOR, PA. – Sophomore Matt Conaway (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) scored three goals, including the game winner with 2:17 remaining, as Cabrini College defeated 14th-ranked SUNY Cortland, 11-10. The Cavaliers are 6-2 with the victory, while Cortland drops to 3-4, with three of its losses being one-goal setbacks on the road.
Freshman Casey Grugan (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) finished with two goals and three assists and Kevin Quinn (Lindenhurst) made 12 saves, six in the fourth quarter, for Cabrini. The Cavaliers trailed 10-8 entering the final period before tying the game on goals by Dan Leigh (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Harriton) and Conaway in the first four minutes.
Juniors Ryan Heath (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), Kyle Simensky (Locust Valley) and Billy Fuchs (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) led Cortland with two goals apiece. Simensky also assisted on two goals. Sophomore Matt Hipenbecker (Mountain Lakes, NJ) started in goal and made one save in the first half. Sophomore Michael Robinson (Alexandria, VA/Thomas Edison) recorded four saves over the final 30 minutes.
The teams were tied 4-4 after the first quarter and Cortland led 6-5 in the second before Cabrini struck for three goals, including a Grugan man-down tally, in the final 4:24 of the half. Down 8-6, the Red Dragons outscored the Cavaliers 4-0 in the third period to take a 10-8 lead. Simensky scored twice and assisted on a goal in the period.
