Franklin & Marshall Knocks off No. 20 Dickinson, 6-5
Carlisle, PA - The numbers were just about as even as they could be on Saturday as visiting Franklin & Marshall slipped past #20-ranked Dickinson College 6-5 on Saturday.
One statistic that was not even came from the "X" as senior Bernie Nolan (Bowie, MD/Gonzaga) won 13-of-14 face-offs on the afternoon. Nolan tallied a game-high seven ground balls as well on the afternoon.
Senior goaltender Kevin Riley (Westfield, NJ/Lawrenceville) was outstanding in goal, making 10 saves, including a number of point-blank stops in the second half.
Senior Ed Lawless (Abington, PA/LaSalle) struck first off an assist from Charlie Gorman (Chevy Chase, MD/Gonzaga) before the Diplomats went on a 6-0 run. That run was over the course of 37 minutes as the Devils were held scoreless until the 3:40 mark of the third period.
F&M led 2-1 at the end of the first and went in front 5-1 at halftime, scoring as time expired. Phil Caputo (Sewickley, PA/Sewickley Academy) converted a Chris Dodson (Bethesda, MD/Landon) pass to end the drought and trigger a four-goal run for Dickinson.
Senior Drew Peace (Lutherville, MD/Boys' Latin) put one away with 48 seconds to play in the third period, cutting the deficit to 6-3. He struck again at the 11:06 mark of the fourth and Lawless made it a one-goal game with just 59 remaining in the contest.
Nolan won the ensuing face-off, the biggest of the afternoon, but a Red Devil turnover allowed the Diplomats to run out the clock for the win.
Six different players scored for F&M (4-4, 1-2) while Dan Coffman matched Riley with 10 saves. Coffman keyed the big first half for F&M with big saves early in the game.
The Red Devils (5-4, 1-2) travel to 16th-ranked Haverford College next Saturday to meet the 'Fords at 1:00 pm.
