No. 10 Trinity Upended by No. 19 Tufts, 16-7

Hartford, Conn. – Senior midfielder Lauren Murphy (Hingham, Mass.) had five goals and three assists to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 16-7 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Sheppard Field.

Trinity, was ranked No. 10 in the nation, drops to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in NESCAC play. Tufts, ranked No. 19 in the nation, improves to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the NESCAC.

Trinity opened the game with a pair of goals by freshman attacker Jenn Calver (Barnard, Vt.), but Tufts quickly responded with a goal from junior attacker Sarah Williams (Bethesda, Md.). The teams traded goals the rest of the first half, including a game-tying score by senior co-captain attacker Lauren Malinowski (Longmeadow, Mass.) with 15 seconds left before the break, resulting in a 5-5 tie at halftime.

Tufts came out strong in the second half and scored nine unanswered goals early in the second half, including two each by sophomore Chrissie Attura (Yarmouth, Maine) and freshman midfielder Jenna Abelli (Framingham, Mass.) to turn a 6-6 deadlock into a 15-6 Jumbo lead.

Sophomore defender Kristina Scontras (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) finally ended the scoring drought with 3:31 left to play. Trinity junior goalkeeper Michelle Smith (Wayland, Mass.) had 12 saves and Tufts sophomore goalie Gillian Kline (Chevy Chase, Md.) had 15 stops.
