Wesleyan Knocks off No. 6 Bowdoin in Overtime, 10-8
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team outscored Bowdoin 4-1 in the second half, and scored twice in overtime to beat the Polar Bears for the first time since 1994, 10-8 on Saturday. Bowdoin falls to 4-3 (1-2 NESCAC) this season. Wesleyan improves to 4-2 (2-1).
Bowdoin built its 7-3 margin as junior Lyndsey Colburn and senior Kate Donoghue each scored a pair. Wesleyan then had five different scorers in gaining five the the next six goals with Sophie Kim tying the game, 8-8, with 13:50 to go in the second half. Bowdoin had the final possession of regulation but couldn't get off a shot as the game went into overtime.
After scoreless extra session, the go-ahead goal came from Wesleyan first-year Charlotte Hastings at 2:29 of the second overtime segment. The goal was set up by senior Cortney Tetrault, who was fouled on the right side of the offensive zone and knew Hastings was ahead of her defender for the restart. She found Hastings cutting to the net and hit her in stride for her third assist of the contest.
Bowdoin won the draw following the go-ahead goal and after a series of activity, had the ball deep in the Wesleyan zone with :29 to go. Wesleyan senior defender Jen Bianculli came up with a timely takeaway, sent the ball ahead to Hastings who cleared through midfield and dumped the ball ahead to a streaking junior Sophia Kim who put it away to complete her hat trick into a virtually empty net at the :05 mark.
The Polar Bears had taken 13 straight meetings since 1994, including a 13-8 decision in the 2006 contest. Bowdoin stands 21-9-1 all-time vs. Wesleyan. Wesleyan sophomore Rachel Stemerman made 13 saves while Bowdoin sophomore Stephanie Collins-Finn stopped nine shots.
