Oneonta Falls to St. John Fisher in Overtime
Junior Katie Glavin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) took a pass from sophomore Jen Springett (Newark, NY/Newark) and then walked in all alone to score the game winning goal for the Cardinals today in the second overtime against Oneonta State. Springett was responsible for sending the game into the extra sessions today when she scored back-to-back goals in the final two minutes including the game-tying goal with 27 seconds left.
Oneonta (4-4) had control of the game in the first half, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Sophomore Brianne Ruzek (Mineola, NY/St. Mary) scored the opening goal for the Red Dragons in the third minute of the game with an assist from junior Kristin O'Leary (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman). O'Leary then scored an unassisted goal less than two minutes later.
Freshman Lauren Glavin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) got St. John Fisher (3-2) on the scoreboard in the seventh minute and, after another Oneonta goal, added a second goal with an assist from her sister Katie. O'Leary and Ruzek would score back-to-back goals to give Oneonta a 6-2 lead in the 22nd minute before senior Haley Koperski (Rochester, NY/Brighton) notched a goal for St. John Fisher in the final minute of the half to make the score 6-3 at the break.
St. John Fisher came out of halftime and ran off six unanswered goals to seize the lead at 9-6. Springett and Lauren Glavin each netted a pair in the run while Katie Glavin and Jillian Lockwood (Clarence, NY/Clarence) each added one goal. After an Oneonta time out, the Red Dragons finally ended its scoring drought in the 46th minute on a free position goal by sophomore Somer Shuffield (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) to cut the deficit to 9-7.
After a St. John Fisher goal made it 10-7, Oneonta ran off five straight goals including three by O'Leary to gain the lead back at 12-10 with just over five minutes remaining in the contest. O'Leary finished the game with five goals and one assist to lead the Oneonta attack.
Koperski scored in the 52nd minute to cut Oneonta's lead to one goal, but less than one minute later junior Erica Krisak (Syracuse, NY/E. Syracuse-Minoa) scored to give Oneonta its two-goal cushion back. The late-game heroics by Springett and Katie Glavin allowed St. John Fisher to leave town with a 14-13 come-from-behind victory.
Freshman Vicky Sahm (Baldwinsville, NY/Bishop Ludden) came in the game at the beginning of the second half and made eight saves to pick up the win in goal. Oneonta will be in action again this Tuesday when they play Skidmore at home beginning at 4:00 p.m.
