St. Mary's (Md.) Edges York (Pa.), 11-9
York, PA – Sophomore attacker Emily Norris (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) tallied a career-high five points on a hat trick and two assists in leading the St. Mary's (Md.) College women's lacrosse team to their second consecutive win with an 11-9 road win over York (Pa.) College Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.
The Seahawks (5-4, 2-1 CAC) opened up first half play with three straight goals, including a pair from sophomore midfielder Lauren Carrier (Crownsville, MD/Old Mill), for a 3-0 lead at 23:50.
But York (3-5, 2-3 CAC) quickly responded with six unanswered goals, including notching two in 32 seconds, to take a 6-3 advantage at 12:01. Six different Spartans scored in the 6-0 run.
Back-to-back goals from junior defender Elizabeth Northfield (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) in less than a minute allowed St. Mary's to close the gap to 6-5 at halftime.
SMCM carried its momentum from the last two minutes of the first half into the second by netting the half's first four goals, giving them a 6-0 run and a 9-6 lead with 22:30 left in the game.
However, the Spartans answered three goals in a row, including two from Brianna Yapps, to knot the game at 9-9 with 10:29 remaining.
Sophomore midfielder Allie Zerhusen (Cockeysville, MD/The Park School) scored the eventual game-winner at 8:19 as Zerhusen converted a free position shot for her 10th goal of the season.
Carrier added an insurance marker at 7:34 with a free position goal of her own.
The last 7:34 of the game was comprised of seven turnovers and only two shots taken between the two squads.
York won draw controls, 14-12, while the Seahawks out-shot the Spartans, 30-26, and out hustled them to 36 of 68 ground balls.
Carrier finished with a hat trick, while Northfield ended the day with two goals. Three Seahawks had five ground balls each and Northfield recorded four draw controls.
Yapps completed the afternoon with three goals and an assist along with seven ground balls, while Alison Napolitano had two goals.
Senior goalie Melissa Puzak (Arnold, MD/Broadneck) earned the win with 14 saves and five ground balls, while York's Anne Feustle turned away seven Seahawk shots.
