Guilford 15, Randolph-Macon 10
Greensboro, N.C. (3/31/07) -- Freshman Carrie Ernst (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) set career-highs with five points (three goals, two assists), five caused turnovers and seven draw controls in Guilford College's 15-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) lacrosse win over Randolph-Macon College Saturday in the Armfield Athletic Center. The win marked Guilford's (5-5, 2-2 ODAC) fourth straight win and the first over the Yellow Jackets since 1997.
Ernst struck early, netting her first goal 75 seconds into the match off of an Allison Brown (Salisbury, Md./Salisbury) assist. Randolph-Macon (5-3, 3-2 ODAC) answered with a Morgan Hutchinson (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Steward School) tally less than a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. Ernst stuck again a minute later to push Guilford's lead to 2-1. The Yellow Jackets' Traci Phipps (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) answered with the first of her game-high four goals, which tied the score at two.
Guilford scored seven of the next eight goals over a 15-minute span to take a commanding 9-3 lead with 7:48 left in the first half. Randolph-Macon scored the next two before Brown found the net to end the first half scoring and give the Quakers a 10-5 halftime lead.
Randolph-Macon (5-3, 3-2) opened the second half with goals by Phipps and Kelly Cramer (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) to cut Guilford's lead to 10-7, but the Yellow Jackets drew no closer as the teams traded goals for the rest of the game.
Six additional Quakers found the back of the net in the win. Brown and Jordan Clodfelter (Adamant, Vt./Union-32) both finished with four points on three goals and one assist. Defenders Kelly Gonzalez (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./ Yorktown) and Caryn Stone (N. Potomac, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) got into the act, both scoring twice, while Mary Hutchins (West Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) and Caryn Washington (Baltimore, Md./Park School) rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece. Freshman Jessica Bolton (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) went the distance in the goal and tied her career-high with 12 saves.
Phipps' four goals and one assist led the Yellow Jackets' offense. Cramer finished with three goals, while Lizzy Spero (Phoenix, Md./John Carroll), Hutchinson and Rebekah Wager (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) all scored once. Randolph-Macon goalie Lindsay Schabert (Falmouth, Va./Stafford) recorded 10 saves between the pipes.
The Quakers return to action Monday (4/2) against visiting ODAC-rival Hollins in a 4:30 p.m. match. Randolph-Macon plays at Greensboro College Sunday, April 1 at 1:00 p.m.
