No. 6 Bowdoin Defeats Plymouth State, 11-5
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team held Plymouth State scoreless in the first half, jumping out to a six-goal lead and cruising to an 11-5 victory on Sunday. The Polar Bears, who are ranked sixth nationally, are 5-3 this season. Plymouth falls for just the second time this year in dropping to 4-2 overall.
Six different goal scorers lifted the hosts to a six-goal halftime advantage. Four of the goals came in a five-minute stretch in the opening frame, as Kate Donoghue, Emily Straus, Taylor White and Lyndsey Colburn all found the back of the net. Jill Steigerwald and Bobbi Dennison added scores later in the frame to make it 6-0 at the break.
Plymouth showed some life early in the second stanza, using a quick 3-1 spurt to start the period. Annie Pinault scored twice in the run to close the gap to 7-3 with 20:02 to play. But the Bowdoin defense clamped down, shutting out Plymouth for the next 14:10 and scoring twice courtesy of Dennison and Donghue to push the lead back to six goals, 9-3, with under six minutes to play.
Stephanie Collins-Finn was strong in net for Bowdoin, making nine saves and allowing just five goals. The netminder also caused two turnovers and collected three groundballs in the victory. Donoghue led the Polar Bears with three goals, while Dennison had two goals and an assist. Taylor White earned team-highs in groundballs (4) and caused turnovers (4).
Kelsey MacDonald and Annie Pinault scored two apiece for the Panthers, while Meg Cupoli netted four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Suzie Lilakos stopped 15 shots for Plymouth, while allowing 11 goals.
