Canadian Combo's 17 Points Lead #1 Dowling to Win

Stony Brook, NY- Junior Ryan Campbell (Brampton, Ontario) and sophomore Jon McClure (Brampton, Ontario) combined for 17 total points in Dowling's 20-11 win over Southern New Hampshire University on April 1. The #1 national ranked Golden Lions improve their record to 4-1 as the Penmen drop to 1-4.

After six minutes of scoreless play, Spencer Rennick put the Penmen on the board with a solo tally. Dowling evened the score two minutes later when CJ Leary (Bay Shore, NY) netted his first of three first quarter goals and the "Canadian Combo" broke through with the go ahead goal as Campbell converted McClure's pass with 4:49 on the clock. Nick Cotter (Whitby, Ontario) found his way through a mass of Penmen to net Dowling's third goal of the game and Leary fired back to back tallies a minute apart to push a 6-1 Dowling lead. With just 23 seconds left on the clock Chris Dindler found a break in the Dowling defense for the Penmen's second goal and end the first quarter with a score of 6-2.

The "Combo" was back in action as they opened the second half, but the Penmen retailed with back to back goals, including a man up goal from Dindler. Gregory Graziano (East Setauket, NY) netted his first goal of the season off a pass from Kevin Rimmer (Ronkonkoma, NY) and Leary found the back of the net off a dish from Cotter for a five point edge (9-4). Each team would score two more goals before heading into the lockroom.

Dowling came out on fire in the second half as they went on a five goal rally to secure a 16-6 cushion over the Penmen. John Delanoy would be the only SNHU player to connect in the third quarter before Campbell closed out the scoring off Cotter's feed. The Penmen pushed hard in the fourth and outscored the Golden Lions 4-3, but it wasn't enough to overcome the gap as Dowling captured to 20-11 victory.

Leary finished with five goals while Rimmer dished off four assists and caused a team high four turnovers. Dowling's face-off unit took command with Graziano going 12 for 24 and McClure 5 for 8. Mike Flandina (Hauppauge, NY) pitched in winning one of his two attempts.

Nick Tracey (Farmingville, NY) made 11 stops in his 48 minutes in front of the net for the Golden Lions and Frank Melhus (Levittown, NY) closed out the game with 4 saves. Delanoy led the way for the Penmen scoring three goals and winning 13 of his 22 face-offs.

The Golden Lions will travel to Le Moyne on April 4 to take on the #2 Dolphins at 3:30 PM.
