Cabrini Deals Scranton Its Fourth Straight Loss, 13-9
RADNOR, Pa.—Cabrini College used a balanced scoring attack to send The University of Scranton to its fourth straight loss, 13-9, in non-conference action Monday evening.
The Cavaliers had ten players score at least one goal to improve to 8-2 on the season, while the Royals, behind a 3-goal effort by senior midfielder Jackie Messantonio (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh), fell to 1-6.
Freshman attackers Erin Nollen (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) and Danielle Rothermel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's), junior attacker Katelyn Penrose (Springfield, Pa./Springfield), junior midfielder Kerri Ricker (Ridley, Pa./Ridley), and sophomore defender Christina Romano (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) scored two goals apiece for Cabrini, which had eight different players score a goal to jump out to a 9-3 halftime lead.
The Royals scored the first three goals of the second-half to cut the deficit to 9-6 before Cabrini regrouped after a timeout and added goals by Penrose and Romano to extend the lead to five, 11-6. Late in the game, Messantonio cut the Cavalier lead again to three, 12-9, before Cabrini senior attacker Allison Sachs (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) closed out the scoring with a goal with 1:59 remaining.
Scranton also received two goals and one assist from freshman attacker Heather Melone (Wall, N.J./Wall Township), two goals from sophomore attacker Erin Quinn (Baltimore, Md./The Institute of Notre Dame), one goal and an assist from freshman attacker Kristen Marquino (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and junior attacker Kaitlyn Mimnaugh (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus), and an assist from sophomore midfielder Diana Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip).
Royal sophomore goalie Kristina Goetz (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) and Cabrini freshman Kate Schmid (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert's) were each credited with 10 saves.
Despite the loss, Messantonio reached a personal milestone by becoming the fourth player in Scranton history to score more than 200 career points. She joins Liz Baumbach (344 points, 2000-2003), Bridget Lee (322 points, 2000-2003), and Kelly Herlihy (278 points, 2003-2006) in this exclusive club. Messantonio now has 201 career points.
The Royals will return to Middle Atlantic Conference action this Wednesday, April 4th, against the Lady Colonels of Wilkes University beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
