Colgate Holds Off Albany to Earn 11-8 Win
HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/3/07) – The Colgate women's lacrosse team withstood a second-half rally to defeat visiting Albany 11-8 on Tuesday, April 3, at Tyler's Field. The win was the second in a row for the Raiders, and improves their record to 4-8 on the season, while the Great Danes drop to 5-5 overall.
Colgate was led by Syracuse natives Tara Casey (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Ashley Didio (Syracuse, N.Y.), who each contributed three goals and an assist. Junior Lindsay Pittard (Skaneateles, N.Y.) added two goals, and three other Raiders found the back of the net in the win.
Kate Fontana led the Great Danes with three goals and an assist. Erin Fitzmartin had two goals and an assist, while Sarah Spillett added a goal and a helper.
Five different Raiders scored within the first 12:11 to give Colgate a 5-0 lead. Albany broke up the shutout at the 19:45 mark when Fontana broke through, but the Raiders scored another three in a row to go up 8-1 with 5:17 before the break. Two minutes later, the Great Danes got their second goal, but Colgate had the last word of the half to take a 9-2 lead to the sidelines.
Casey scored the first goal of the second half to make it 10-2 before Albany's offense woke up and scored five goals within 4:10 to pull within three, 10-7, 12:19 into the period. The Raiders stopped the bleeding, and held the Great Danes to just one goal the rest of the way, while adding an insurance goal of their own, to set the final at 11-8.
Colgate sophomore Sara Drexler (Pottstown, Pa.) made 11 saves, including eight in the second half, to earn the win between the pipes. Albany's Jen Daly finished the game with nine saves.
The Raiders return to Patriot League play when they visit Lehigh on Friday, April 6, for at 7:00 p.m., game. The contest marks Colgate's final road game of the regular season; CU will play its final four games of the year at Tyler's Field.
