#19 Roanoke Downs Widener in First Game on New Field
SALEM, VA -- The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team used a 9-0 second half run to pull out 16-9 victory over visiting Widener University on Wednesday in Salem, VA. The game was played in Roanoke's new FieldTurf stadium, the first game played on the surface. The Maroons, who own a 2-0 all-time record against the Pride, improve to 8-4 on the season. Widener falls to 4-4 overall.
The Maroons held a 7-5 halftime lead after outscoring Widener 3-1 in the second quarter. Widener's Gavin Goane cut the Maroon lead to 7-6 on an unassisted score with 9:58 left in the third. About three minutes later Roanoke junior Zach Thomas found himself alone on the wing and scored on a 10-yard low shot. Less than a minute later Thomas found a cutting Ashton Hotchkiss, who scored the third of his three goals, and Roanoke lead was 9-6. Those were the first two of Roanoke's nine straight goals.
After picking up a loose ball after a missed shot, Roanoke's Jon Mason fed Scott Pattison on the crease, giving Roanoke the first goal of the fourth and a 12-6 lead. Pat March dodged from behind the cage to score an unassisted goal and Steve Furdock matched with 6:09 left to give Roanoke a 14-6 lead. After a Mason man-up score, Maroon freshman Dan Cochran scored on an outside shot to give the Maroons a 10-goal lead, 16-6. The Pride scored the final three goals of the game, the third a man-up goal with 10 seconds left to make the final 16-9.
After the Maroons jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, the Pride used a man-up goal with 5:57 left in the first to break Roanoke's momentum. Roanoke's penalty, which was non-releasable, had just expired when Luke Weber scored his second straight to make the score 4-2. The Pride scored the final two goals of the period and after one the score was tied at four.
Roanoke junior Billy Cameron, this week's Old Dominion Athletic Conference Player of the Week, won the opening face-off of the second quarter, dodged through the WU defense and scored from five-yards out. The Maroons never trailed again. Jon Mason followed with an outside bounce-shot goal and Rob Clements scored on a shot on the crease and Roanoke's lead was 7-4. Weber scored with 50 seconds left in the half and Roanoke lead was 7-5 at the break.
Roanoke is back in action on Saturday in a home game against the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College. The game is scheduled for a 6:00pm face-off, a change from the original 1:00 pm start.
