#12 Wesleyan Doubles up Connecticut College
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Breaking away from a slim 3-2 lead with eight minutes left in the first-half on a cold, wet night on the turf at Wesleyan University, the homestanding Cardinals, ranked 12th nationally in Division III, netted four goals before intermission to pull out to a 7-2 advantage over the visiting Connecticut College Camels.
With junior Sophia Kim scoring her second of the game on her way to a four-goal outing at 25:55 of the second half, and first-year Charlotte Hastings tallying on a free-position 2:35 later, Wesleyan (5-2, 3-1 NESCAC) had its biggest lead of the game, 9-2. To that point, sophomore goaltender Rachel Stemerman had nine saves for the Cardinals on her way to a 14-save night in 55 minutes of action.
Substitute sophomore Suz Gerhardt made three stops while allowing the final Conn goal. Conn. netminder first-year Jenna Ross had 14 saves as well in a busy evening's work. Sophomore Sarah Orkin added three goals for Wesleyan, bringing her team-leading total to 19. Kim is now second with 15.
Conn. College (1-5, 0-4 NESCAC) got a pair of goals from top scorer junior Lindsey Coit (15 goals) and a goal and two assists from junior Sarah Minor (8-7-15). The win was the sixth in a row for Wesleyan over Conn. as the team have met each year since 1976 with Conn. holding a 20-12 lead in the series.
